Red alert issued for Concepción: flow of Andalién river rises to critical level

Authorities have declared a red alert for Concepción due to critical levels of the Andalién River’s flow. The alert replaces a previous yellow warning issued earlier in the day after monitoring stations recorded river levels reaching the red threshold. The decision was made by the National Service of Prevention and Response to Disasters (Senapred) in coordination with the Presidential Regional Delegation of the Biobío region, based on data provided by the General Directorate of Waters (DGA). The alert took effect on Saturday, August 29, and will remain in place until conditions warrant otherwise. Senapred has canceled the ongoing yellow flood alert for the commune, which had been active since the same day. The key factor prompting the elevation of the alert level was the reading from the fluviometric station “Río Andalién before the Chaimávida tollbooth,” located in Concepción. This station recorded a rise in water flow, reaching values corresponding to the red alert threshold. According to the DGA, this condition signifies an increased risk for residents living near the river course. The DGA maintains continuous monitoring of the regional hydrographic network, tracking changes in flows and water levels of major rivers and streams. This monitoring includes both current readings from stations and forecasts of weather conditions, which are used to assess potential changes in risk levels. With the declaration of the red alert, Senapred stated that all necessary and available resources will be mobilized to address the emergency and manage the situation, taking into account the extent and severity of the event. The alert will stay in effect while the conditions related to the rising flow and the risk of flooding require it. Authorities emphasize that the situation remains dynamic, and further updates will be provided as needed. Local communities have been advised to remain vigilant and follow official guidance to ensure safety during this period of heightened risk.
