From La Legua to the Municipal Theatre: Raipillan, the organization that breaks down stigmas through music and dance

Raipillan, a community-based organization based in La Legua, Chile, has achieved a milestone with its upcoming performance at the Teatro Municipal in Santiago. The group, founded in 2004, uses folk music and dance to challenge stigma and promote inclusion, social mobility, and human development among hundreds of families. This Sunday, August 2, Raipillan will perform in the city's main theater under the title Gala Folclórica 2026 “América de Pie: Danzas que abrazan el corazón de nuestros pueblos”, with the theme “De La Legua al Municipal”, a phrase that encapsulates the journey of the organization. The story behind Raipillan began with an incident of discrimination. Fabiola Salinas, founder and director general of the foundation, recalls how she was asked to prepare dances for a graduation ceremony at a local school in December 2004. Her colleagues initially agreed to participate but later withdrew due to fears related to crime and insecurity in La Legua. Faced with this challenge, Salinas turned to her family, inviting her daughter and two nephews to help stage the performances. That day marked the beginning of Raipillan, which quickly gained recognition and expanded its reach through word of mouth and community support. Over the years, Raipillan has grown into one of Chile’s most notable community initiatives, focusing on social integration through artistic expression. It currently includes 350 registered members, with approximately 319 actively participating. More than 2,000 individuals have passed through its programs, ranging from children aged three to elderly adults. Each year, the organization conducts over 1,300 hours of rehearsals and holds nearly 200 public performances. These efforts have established Raipillan as a key player in promoting social cohesion and reducing vulnerability among participants. The organization operates with a clear mission: each hour spent in rehearsal and learning contributes to a reduction in exposure to abandonment, violence, and drug use. In addition to its core activities, Raipillan runs complementary programs such as the Psicosocial Bollén initiative, which offers emotional support and assistance to families, and the Mujeres Violeta workshop, designed to create opportunities for women. Despite the challenges faced by La Legua, a historically stigmatized and vulnerable area, Raipillan has managed to carve out a space for itself within the broader cultural landscape. Salinas acknowledges the difficulties of establishing credibility in a region associated with crime and social issues. However, she emphasizes that the organization has succeeded in gaining respect from the local community. When Raipillan performs, the public responds positively, creating a safe environment where art can flourish without disruption. The upcoming performance at the Teatro Municipal represents more than just a show, it symbolizes the culmination of years of effort and resilience. It also reflects the growing recognition of Raipillan’s role in fostering social change through creative expression. As the organization continues to expand its influence, it remains committed to using music and dance as tools for empowerment and transformation.
