In a move that has sparked alarm among astronomers worldwide, an American startup called Reflect Orbital has secured approval from the U.S. Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to launch Eärendil-1, a satellite equipped with an 18-meter-by-18-meter mirror. Designed to reflect sunlight onto the dark side of Earth, the device aims to illuminate a five-square-kilometer area with the brightness of four full moons.
