Dangote picks Lamu, Kenya for East Africa mega-refinery — Report

A senior official from Dangote Industries Limited announced that the proposed 700,000-barrel-per-day East African oil refinery, planned by Africa's wealthiest individual Aliko Dangote, will be constructed in Lamu, Kenya. The project, comparable to Dangote's existing refinery in Nigeria, is expected to take approximately 30 months to complete. Initially, Tanzania was also under consideration for the site, but Dangote has now finalized the choice of Lamu after discussions with Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan. The Nigerian billionaire had previously favored Mombosa but shifted focus to Lamu. Dangote's refinery in Nigeria, which began operations in 2024, is already the largest on the continent and aims to expand to 1.4 million barrels per day by 2028.
