The day of the miners under the Old Peak

On August 2, 2026, the traditional 55th annual Day of the Blacksmiths will take place under the slopes of Staro Vrh, near the village of Grebljica. The event, organized by the Tourist Society of Staro Vrh, promises a day filled with cultural activities, historical demonstrations, and local cuisine. The festival begins early, with a morning walk known as “Med Gorami” starting at 8:00 AM. This guided trek offers visitors a chance to explore the scenic trails leading to the summit of Staro Vrh. At noon, the first part of the festivities kicks off with a performance by the Strmina Express ensemble, followed by a cultural and ethnographic programme at 3:00 PM. The highlight of the day will be the ceremonial lighting of the forge, a tradition that has been upheld for decades. Throughout the event, attendees can witness demonstrations of blacksmithing techniques, including the forging of iron and the use of charcoal. Artisans will showcase the craftsmanship of old tools and machinery, while vintage tractors and equipment will be on display. Traditional music and folklore performances will provide entertainment, featuring local singers and folk groups. At 4:30 PM, a competition for couples in the game of “pajsanje hloda” will commence, offering both fun and a test of skill. As evening approaches, the stage will be taken over by the Veseli Svatje ensemble, providing a lively musical finale. Food stalls will offer a variety of local specialties, including grilled meats, blacksmith’s pie, and other regional dishes. Cold drinks, homemade cheese, and ice cream will also be available. Organizers have encouraged visitors to enjoy the atmosphere and participate in the activities, emphasizing that there are multiple options for exploration. For those interested in walking, several routes are available. A short 15-minute walk leads to the cottage at Staro Vrh, while a more challenging 40-minute ascent takes visitors to the summit. Alternatively, a shorter trail along the southern slope allows for a brief stroll, or one can venture further into the Loški Pogorec region, reaching the remote village of Blegoš. The event continues to draw crowds each year, reflecting the enduring appeal of this cultural celebration. With its blend of history, community, and recreation, the Day of the Blacksmiths remains a cherished tradition in the area.
