Conaf denounces the presence of snowmobiles in illegal activities in the Malalcagüello national reserve

The Chilean National Forestry Corporation (Conaf) has denounced the presence of snowmobiles being used in illegal activities within the Malalcagüello National Reserve, located in the Araucanía region. During a routine patrol, forest guards identified six snowmobiles engaged in unauthorized operations inside the protected area. In response, Conaf announced plans to file formal complaints with the Local Police Court in Curacautín, citing violations of local regulations that prohibit such activities within protected zones and outside designated routes. Regional Conaf Director Héctor Tillería confirmed that the discovery occurred during a standard patrol operation. He emphasized that the corporation will take legal action against those responsible, noting that these actions violate municipal ordinances designed to protect the environment. The director stated that Conaf will intensify its patrols in collaboration with Carabineros, the national police force, to identify individuals engaging in similar practices promptly. Tillería warned that many agencies have repeatedly attempted to conduct such activities, and Conaf would remain firm in prohibiting access to snowmobiles within national parks and reserves. He highlighted that these activities undermine the conservation goals of the protected areas and pose a threat to the region’s flora and fauna, particularly endangered species. The director stressed that Conaf would implement all necessary measures to address the issue effectively and in a timely manner. The Malalcagüello National Reserve spans over 23,000 hectares and is known for its diverse ecosystems, including temperate rainforests and native forests. It is home to several protected species, including the huemul, a rare deer endemic to southern Chile. Conservation efforts in the reserve aim to preserve biodiversity while allowing controlled tourism under strict environmental guidelines. The presence of snowmobiles, which can cause significant ecological damage through noise pollution, soil erosion, and disturbance to wildlife, represents a serious challenge to these objectives.
