Chilean citizen breaks into Zagreb and Split, damages more than 800,000 euros

A Chilean national has been arrested in Croatia after allegedly committing five serious burglaries in Zagreb and Split, causing material damage exceeding 800,000 euros. The suspect, a 35-year-old man, was detained following a joint criminal investigation conducted by the Zagreb City Police Department and the Split-Dalmatia County Police Department. According to police reports, the individual broke into two homes and one apartment in Zagreb between July 4th and July 17th, using taxi services to travel to the locations. His targets were properties owned by foreign nationals in the Medveščak area and a home in Novi Zagreb belonging to a 54-year-old woman. The suspect reportedly forced entry through terrace doors using physical force and tools before stealing cash, jewelry, clothing, suitcases, and several wallets used for cryptocurrency and online transactions. Police stated that he entered the premises with violence, breaking into the homes and apartments by forcibly opening doors. In each case, he managed to secure personal belongings and financial assets before fleeing the scene. Further investigations revealed that the suspect continued his criminal activities between July 31st and August 1st, targeting two more apartments in Žnjan, Split. These residences were occupied by foreign nationals. He again used taxis to reach the locations and blocked exits with stools while searching the premises. From these apartments, he stole clothing, perfumes, jewelry, cosmetics, technical equipment, cash, and documents. The identity of the accused was confirmed through collaborative forensic work between the two police departments. Authorities determined that the suspect had traveled from Split toward Zagreb during the week, arriving in the city and being apprehended shortly thereafter. The total estimated material damage caused by the crimes exceeds 800,000 euros. Following the completion of the criminal investigation, the suspect was handed over to the custodial authority. A special report has been submitted to the relevant state prosecutor’s office in Zagreb for further legal proceedings. The case highlights ongoing efforts by Croatian law enforcement to combat burglary and property crime, particularly involving foreign-owned assets.
