‘Children of Blood and Bone’ offers first glimpse ahead of 2027 release (PHOTOS)

The first official images from Children of Blood and Bone, the long-awaited fantasy film adaptation of Tomi Adeyemi's bestselling novel, have been released, giving audiences their best look yet at the project’s vision. The promotional stills highlight the film’s rich West African-inspired aesthetic, showcasing the elaborate costumes, armor, and regal attire worn by the main characters. These visuals come just months before the film’s planned release on 15 January 2027, marking a significant step in its marketing campaign. Among the featured actors are Thuso Mbedu as Zélie Adebola, the protagonist driven to restore magic to her homeland, and Tosin Cole as Tain, her brother. Amandla Stenberg portrays Princess Amari, while Damson Idris plays Prince Inan. Additional cast members include Viola Davis, Cynthia Erivo, Idris Elba, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Regina King, and Lashana Lynch, all appearing in the first-look photographs. The images also spotlight other key figures such as Richard Mofe-Damijo, Zackary Momoh, Bukky Bakray, Saniyya Sidney, Ayra Starr, Shamz Garuba, Pamilerin Ayodeji, Temi Fagbenle, Kola Bodunde, and Diaana Babnicova. The film, directed by Gina Prince-Bythewood, is based on the first book of Adeyemi’s Legacy of Orïsha trilogy, originally published in 2018. Set in the fictional kingdom of Orïsha, the story centers on Zélie Adebola, a young Diviner whose efforts to revive magic clash with the oppressive rule of a tyrannical monarch. Her journey, supported by her brother Tain, Princess Amari, and Prince Inan, delves into themes of power, identity, and resistance against systemic oppression. The narrative is described as a bold exploration of Black heritage and cultural resilience, drawing heavily from Yoruba traditions and African history. Production for the film began in Lagos, Nigeria, in February 2025 and concluded later that year. Filmmakers emphasized the use of practical sets, real-world locations, and large-scale action sequences to craft a grounded fantasy experience. This approach reflects the creative team’s commitment to authenticity, aiming to honor the cultural roots of the source material. The production has also highlighted its focus on diversity, featuring a predominantly Black cast and incorporating elements of African folklore and mythology into its storytelling. The release of these first-look images coincides with ongoing discussions around the film’s portrayal of race and culture. Some critics have raised concerns about colorism and representation, particularly regarding casting choices in a story deeply tied to Yoruba identity. Paramount Pictures is set to release Children of Blood and Bone in theaters and IMAX venues on 15 January 2027. Although exclusive footage was previously showcased at CinemaCon earlier this year, no full trailer has yet been made public. The newly released images represent the first major marketing materials available to the public, further building excitement ahead of the film’s debut. With its blend of high-stakes storytelling, culturally rich setting, and diverse cast, the film aims to deliver a fresh take on the fantasy genre while honoring its African origins.
