Nigeria begins search for 2027 Oscars entry after 2026 setback

Nigeria has launched a nationwide search for its official entry in the International Feature Film (IFF) category of the 99th Academy Awards, following a notable absence from last year's ceremony. The Nigerian Official Selection Committee (NOSC) announced the opening of submissions for eligible films, which will be considered for representation at the upcoming Oscars in Los Angeles. This marks the country's return to the selection process after it failed to submit a film for the 98th Academy Awards due to concerns over the quality of entries. The submission period runs from 1 August to 31 August 2026, during which Nigerian filmmakers, producers, and rights holders can apply via the NOSC's official portal, www.thenosc.org. The chosen film will represent Nigeria in the IFF category at the 99th Academy Awards, set for 14 March 2027. The decision comes after the NOSC's review committee determined that none of the entries for the previous year met the required standards of creative and technical excellence. Since its establishment in 2019, the NOSC has been responsible for selecting Nigeria's official Oscar entry. Despite multiple submissions over the years, the country has yet to secure a nomination in the IFF category. The current initiative presents another chance for Nigerian filmmakers to gain recognition on the global stage. To qualify, a film must be feature-length, produced outside the United States, and include at least 50 percent of its dialogue in a language other than English. Nigerian Pidgin English is accepted under the Academy's rules. Additionally, the film must have accurate English subtitles and a runtime exceeding 40 minutes. It must also be shown publicly in a cinema for at least seven consecutive days before being released online or on television. Films that do not meet these criteria may still qualify if they win a top prize at a recognized international film festival. The Academy has expanded this pathway to include events such as Berlin, Cannes, Venice, Sundance, Toronto, and Busan. This provides an alternative route for films that might not have gone through the traditional submission process. The 99th Academy Awards will be held on 14 March 2027 and will be broadcast live in over 200 countries. This wide reach underscores the significance of the event and the importance of securing a strong entry for Nigeria. As the deadline for submissions approaches, the NOSC continues to emphasize the need for high-quality, culturally relevant films that reflect the diversity and richness of Nigerian storytelling.
