A cattle farming family in north Queensland is participating in a trial to grow pongamia trees, which produce oil for sustainable aviation fuel (SAF). The Lawrie family, who have operated their cattle station since 2004, converted a 10-hectare paddock into a renewable fuel trial, planting pongamia trees alongside livestock. The trial is managed by SilvoPlus, a division of JetZero Australia, which aims to optimize grazing practices and explore the dual use of pongamia trees for both biofuel production and cattle feed. Despite the promising developments, there is currently no processing facility in Australia to convert pongamia oil into SAF. JetZero Australia plans to build a biorefinery in Townsville, aiming to supply SAF to regional airports by 2028. Scientists are also investigating the potential of pongamia seed shells as cattle feed.
