Why investors are upbeat on the long-delayed Asean power grid

Investors and Indonesian policymakers are showing increased confidence in the long-delayed ASEAN power grid initiative, which aims to create a unified electricity network across Southeast Asia. The plan, first discussed in 1997, has seen limited progress, with only eight of 18 planned interconnection projects operational by 2024, providing approximately 7.5 gigawatts of capacity. At the Nusa Dua Forum in Bali, Stefanus Hadiwidjaja, managing director of Indonesia's sovereign wealth fund Danantara, highlighted a proposed cross-border electricity pact between Singapore and Jakarta as a significant step toward a regional grid. This agreement could enable Indonesia to export up to 3.4 gigawatts of renewable electricity to Singapore by 2035, meeting about a third of the city-state's energy needs.
