A dispute over waste management has erupted in Split after the mayor of Sinj, Miro Bulj, arrived at the building of the Split-Dalmatian County Government in a garbage truck. The incident occurred following the closure of the Mojanka landfill by the State Inspectorate earlier this week. According to reports, Bulj claimed he had no justification for shutting down the site while the Regional Waste Management Center Lećevica remained unopened. After arriving with the truck, Bulj attempted to unload waste near the county government building but was prevented from doing so by police. The situation began when Bulj traveled to Split in a garbage truck from the Mojanka landfill, which had been closed by authorities. He told reporters that he did not see a reason to close the facility while the new waste center was still under construction. Following his arrival, Bulj met with Split-Dalmatian County Governor Blaženko Boban, but according to Bulj, no resolution emerged from their discussion. Local media reported that Bulj initially blocked the road entrance in front of the county government building before a driver from the Cleanliness Company of the Cetina Region was fined for illegal parking. Police then intervened to stop the unloading of waste in front of Boban’s office. Bulj stated that he had briefly considered the situation after driving around and decided to open the Mojanka landfill himself. He emphasized that only Sinj would be allowed to dispose of waste there, and he took responsibility for the decision. However, he noted that strong police forces prevented him from unloading the waste in front of the county government. He added that he did not want to dump the waste on the street or at the bus station. Boban joined Bulj outside the county government building and addressed the media, responding to questions raised by Bulj regarding the delay in opening the Lećevica waste center. Boban clarified that the responsibility for managing household waste lies entirely with local municipalities and cities, as stipulated by the Waste Management Act. He reiterated that the Split-Dalmatian County Government does not bear responsibility for such matters. Referring to the closure of the Mojanka landfill, Boban reminded reporters of a similar situation last year. He pointed out that the city of Sinj had failed to submit a required document, a bank guarantee, to obtain permission for waste management on its territory. This failure led to the previous closure of the landfill. Boban urged the city of Sinj to utilize legal avenues, including filing an appeal, to resolve the current issue. He expressed confidence that the problem would be resolved similarly to how it was handled last year, allowing the Alka and Dani Velike Gospe companies to operate properly in waste management. Commenting on Bulj's actions, Boban described the situation as a political spectacle rather than a genuine attempt to solve the problem. He suggested that organizing trucks and transporting waste around the county created more drama than simply submitting the necessary documentation. His remarks were reported by the Dalmatian portal, highlighting the tension between local and regional authorities over waste management responsibilities. The incident underscores ongoing challenges in implementing waste management policies across different levels of governance. As discussions continue, the focus remains on resolving the administrative hurdles that have delayed the operation of the new waste center.
