Border toy screening finds 12% exceed toxic-metal limits Researchers have found that nearly half of the children’s toys examined in the El Paso-Ciudad Juárez region exceeded acceptable levels of toxic metals, according to a study published in Environmental Pollution. The research, conducted over an 11-month period, analyzed 333 toys from popular retail stores, with 109 collected in El Paso and 224 in Ciudad Juárez, proportional to the number of children under 14 in each city. Using X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy, scientists tested for elements such as lead, cadmium, arsenic, chromium, nickel, zinc, and titanium. Of the toys examined, 78% contained at least one harmful element, with approximately one in eight containing three or more. Nickel, known for causing allergic reactions, was present in more than a third of the samples. One toy was entirely composed of nickel, and four others had more than 60% nickel content. Lead was detected in 3% of the toys, primarily in inexpensive jewelry, where some components contained up to 67% lead. Arsenic and cadmium, both classified as human carcinogens, were found in 18 and 15 items, respectively, all of which were purchased in Ciudad Juárez. Forty samples, or 12% of the total, contained metal concentrations exceeding the limits established by U.S. and Mexican toy safety standards. Toys from Ciudad Juárez were about three times more likely to surpass these thresholds compared to those from El Paso. Children’s jewelry, which accounted for around 41% of the sample, posed the greatest risk. Researchers emphasized that XRF measurements reflect the total metal content in a toy, whereas safety regulations focus on the amount that could transfer to skin or mucous membranes via contact. As such, the findings serve as a preliminary indication of potential hazards rather than definitive regulatory breaches. Follow-up studies will include leaching tests simulating real-world conditions and expanded sampling in additional border areas. The study highlights the need for consistent safety standards, improved labeling, and ongoing surveillance to safeguard the health of the approximately 565,000 children living in the binational Paso del Norte region. The research was led by The University of Texas at El Paso, with collaboration from institutions in both the United States and Mexico. Jesus Antonio Rodríguez-Loya, a doctoral student in environmental science and engineering at UTEP, designed the study alongside Professor Jorge Gardea-Torresdey, who serves as the senior author. Additional contributors included Ph.D. students Maricarmen Lerma and Abraham Dagda-Torres from UTEP, and Dr. Juan Pedro Flores Margez from the Universidad Autónoma de Ciudad Juárez, who handled the statistical analysis. Dr. Marc Knecht, dean of the UTEP College of Science, noted that the research combined advanced analytical techniques with practical concerns relevant to local families. “Our faculty and students took a sophisticated analytical technique out of the laboratory and applied it to a question that matters to every parent in the Paso del Norte region,” he stated. “It is rigorous research in direct service of our community.” The study underscores the importance of addressing hazardous materials in consumer products, particularly those intended for young children. With increasing awareness of the dangers associated with toxic metals, efforts to ensure safer toys remain critical. The findings also highlight the value of binational cooperation in tackling public health issues that span borders.
