Book and website to improve students’ learning of environment launched in The Nilgiris

A new educational initiative aimed at enhancing students' understanding of their natural surroundings has been launched in the Nilgiris district. On Thursday, the book Nilgiris Uyirsholai and a companion website were unveiled during a ceremony in Udhagamandalam. The launch was presided over by District Collector Lakshmi Bhavya Tanneeru and Asha Ajith, Director of the Environment and Climate Change Department in Tamil Nadu’s government. The project seeks to integrate environmental education into the curriculum using the region's unique ecological features and traditional practices. The Nilgiris Uyirsholai initiative targets 51 government schools in the district as part of its initial phase. A total of 2,250 students have been enrolled in the program, which includes structured learning modules focused on the local environment, biodiversity, and indigenous knowledge systems. The project emphasizes hands-on learning, encouraging students to engage directly with their surroundings through field studies, inquiries, and interactive activities. During the event, District Collector Lakshmi Bhavya Tanneeru outlined the objectives of the project. She emphasized that the initiative aims to bridge classroom learning with real-world experiences, allowing students to explore their immediate environments and develop a deeper appreciation for nature. “This project is not just about imparting knowledge,” she said. “It is about creating a generation that understands and respects the natural world.” To ensure effective implementation, 51 teachers received specialized training in two phases. The training covered nature-based practical activities, inquiry-based learning methods, and experiential teaching strategies. This approach ensures that educators can guide students in exploring topics such as local flora and fauna, water bodies, forest ecosystems, and environmental challenges facing the region. The Nilgiris Uyirsholai program also incorporates elements of traditional knowledge alongside modern scientific principles. It encourages students to recognize the value of indigenous practices related to conservation and sustainability. By integrating these perspectives, the project fosters a holistic view of environmental stewardship and promotes responsible behavior towards natural resources. Asha Ajith praised the efforts of the district administration in launching the initiative. She expressed confidence that the program would serve as a model for similar projects across Tamil Nadu. “We hope to expand this initiative beyond the Nilgiris district,” she remarked. “Every student should have access to quality environmental education that connects them with their surroundings.” In addition to the book and website, the project provides students with tools to actively contribute to environmental preservation. Students are encouraged to practice waste segregation, plant and care for trees, and adopt sustainable habits in their daily lives. These actions are intended to cultivate long-term environmental consciousness and community involvement. The district administration highlighted that the program aligns with broader state-level goals of promoting eco-friendly practices and raising awareness about climate change. Officials noted that the success of the initiative depends on sustained collaboration between schools, local communities, and environmental experts. Regular assessments will be conducted to evaluate the impact of the program and make necessary adjustments. The launch of Nilgiris Uyirsholai marks a significant step toward embedding environmental education within the formal schooling system. With continued support and engagement from all stakeholders, the project is expected to create lasting changes in how students perceive and interact with their natural environment.
