Belgium faces unprecedented fire as Europe's wildfires continue

Belgium is battling an unprecedented wildfire while forest fires continue unabated across Europe. The European Union deployed three helicopters and two tankers to help contain the blaze in eastern Belgium, according to EU crisis commissioner officials. The fire, which broke out in the High Fens, a major nature reserve, has been burning since Friday. Local firefighters, farmers, and military personnel have worked tirelessly to bring it under control, with authorities ordering residents in some villages to evacuate their homes. A thick plume of smoke rises into the sky over the High Fens, highlighting the severity of the situation. The fire comes amid a series of extreme heatwaves sweeping across Europe this summer. Scientists say human-driven climate change has increased the likelihood of conditions that allow wildfires to spread more rapidly and burn longer. This week alone marks Belgium’s fifth heatwave of the season, intensifying the risk of forest fires. In Spain, similar challenges are being faced. A fire declared on Monday in the northeastern region of Aragon forced the evacuation of over 1,000 people from 18 towns and has already affected more than 15,000 hectares. Over 600 firefighters were deployed, managing to halt the flames from reaching urban areas and protecting two monasteries. In Andalusia, another fire has been consuming pine and eucalyptus forests in Huelva province for eight days, prompting the evacuation of over 600 people. Despite the ongoing threat, officials reported positive signs. Regional emergency chief Antonio Sanz stated that they had entered the phase where the fire was no longer advancing during the night. More than 1,000 firefighters remain active in the affected area, which spans over 25,000 hectares. Authorities clarified that this figure refers to the perimeter of the fire, not the burned land. Meanwhile, France is dealing with renewed activity in its southwestern Landes region. A forest fire that had previously been contained resumed spreading early Saturday morning, having already scorched 1,580 hectares. Favorable weather conditions on Saturday afternoon, including lower temperatures and potential evening rain, offered temporary relief. Prefect Gilles Clavreul noted that the fire had not expanded further but remained active. Approximately 550 firefighters, supported by four Canadairs, two DASH aircraft, and one Chinook helicopter, are focusing on a new hotspot that emerged overnight. This second focus is described as particularly dangerous, with unstable edges. Greece is also under high alert due to elevated fire risks caused by strong winds. Firefighters are on standby as over 50 agricultural and forest fires have occurred in the past 24 hours. Most of these incidents have been quickly controlled, though the danger remains significant. French civil aviation authority’s water-bombing Canadair CL-415 dropped water onto trees in a forest near Luglon, illustrating the coordinated efforts across borders to tackle the growing challenge of wildfires in Europe.
