Balance after police committee: Homicides have decreased by 17% nationwide

Chile’s Minister of Security, Martín Arrau, presented preliminary statistics showing a 17% national decline in homicides during the year so far, according to a press conference held Monday. The data comes after a recent police committee meeting and highlights significant reductions in violent crime across several regions. Arrau emphasized that while these figures remain preliminary, they indicate a notable trend in reducing violence nationwide. The minister detailed regional variations in homicide rates, noting a 43% drop in Arica and Parinacota, a 76% decrease in Atacama, and a 17% reduction in the Metropolitan Region. He also pointed to a 45% decline in kidnappings reported by the National Police Investigations Directorate (PDI). Meanwhile, drug seizures have increased by 60% compared to previous years, suggesting intensified efforts against narcotics trafficking. Irregular entries into the country have fallen by 86%, with a marked improvement in the rate of individuals being redirected through legal processes, now reaching 73%, up from around 20–30% in earlier years. Violence in the Southern Macrozone has also seen a 17% reduction, according to Arrau. On the prison front, the current population stands at 64,000 inmates, including 16% who are foreign nationals. The minister highlighted the detention of a high-profile criminal known as "El Panda," along with five members of his support network. He stated that further investigations are underway and stressed that no one committing such violent crimes would escape punishment. Arrau addressed controversy surrounding a video released by Ítalo Omegna, a member of the Libertarian Party, which sparked debate over alleged misconduct by security officials. The minister declined to comment directly on the specific case but reiterated the government's commitment to enforcing strict standards within the Ministry of Public Security. He mentioned ongoing work to implement more than 40 measures aimed at ensuring compliance among ministry staff. Arrau urged caution and respect for others when dealing with matters involving both legal violations and common sense issues. In response to threats made against gendarme officers, often involving flower crowns, Arrau acknowledged the seriousness of the issue despite its long-standing nature. He emphasized the need for a unified and robust state response, stating that law enforcement must be equipped with legitimate self-defense capabilities. This includes proactive measures not just for responding to crimes in progress but also for addressing the level of threat faced daily by gendarmes working alongside hardened criminals, including traffickers and hitmen. Rubén Pérez, Director of Gendarmería, confirmed that incidents involving threats against personnel occur regularly. While some cases gain more public attention, he noted that the arrest of a suspect demonstrates that investigations are progressing positively. From 2024 to the present, numerous instances have been recorded where gendarme officers were targeted with unprecedented forms of intimidation. Pérez expressed hope that continued investigations will yield results and assured that all necessary actions would be taken to address these threats effectively.
