Austria to hit drivers: road fines will be cut by half

Austrian authorities have announced significant changes to traffic fines, effective January 1, 2027, with penalties increasing substantially across the country. The new system introduces a unified national fine scale, replacing previously varying regional rates. This move aims to standardize penalties nationwide while addressing disparities among different regions. The Austrian Ministry of Transport has confirmed that the revised penalty schedule will apply uniformly throughout the country. According to official documents, certain violations will see their associated fines increase by more than ten euros. For instance, parking in restricted areas will carry a fine of 60 euros, while driving on emergency lanes will result in a penalty of 200 euros. Other notable increases include fines for dangerous overtaking, riding on cycle paths, and failure to comply with road rules on motorways. The Österreichischer Automobilclub (ÖAMTC), Austria’s automobile club, supports the initiative, emphasizing that previous differences in penalty amounts across regions made enforcement inconsistent and difficult to track. Martin Hoffer, the club's chief legal officer, noted that the publication of the complete fine catalog represents an important step forward. It ensures drivers will know exactly what consequences they face for specific offenses. However, the ÖAMTC also pointed out that the increases were more substantial than initially anticipated, given the current cost of living. According to estimates from the automobil club, average traffic fines are expected to rise by around 50 percent. Some individual violations will see even sharper increases. Parking in unauthorized zones or failing to follow parking time restrictions will now incur a fine of 60 euros. Similar penalties will apply to other minor traffic infractions. Failure to obey a stop sign will result in a fine of 70 euros, and running through a yellow light at a traffic signal will also carry a similar penalty. For speeding violations, the fines range between 40 and 120 euros depending on the type of road and the degree of over-speeding. Higher speed limits are covered under the Austrian Road Traffic Act, which also includes adjustments to penalty amounts. The highest new fine applies to driving on emergency lanes, which will now cost 200 euros. Dangerous overtaking will be fined 140 euros, while violating the rule against overtaking on the right side will cost 110 euros. Driving on the wrong side of the road on motorways will also lead to a fine of 100 euros. While the ministry acknowledges the overall trend of increased fines, it clarifies that not all penalties will rise by exactly 50 percent. Instead, the adjustments reflect the highest existing fines within each region. This means some drivers might experience larger increases than others, due to prior regional discrepancies. The government anticipates approximately 80 million euros in additional revenue from these changes.
