AVS to hold pet adoption drive in Singapore’s CBD for the first time

Singapore's Animal and Veterinary Service (AVS) is set to host its inaugural pet adoption drive in the city's central business district (CBD), marking a significant shift in efforts to promote pet adoption among urban residents. The event, dubbed Paws In The City, will run from August 27 to 29 at the Guoco Tower Urban Park in Tanjong Pagar, open daily from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. More than 10 animal welfare organizations will participate, offering a variety of pets, including dogs, cats, small mammals, and even parrots, for adoption. This marks the first time AVS has brought such an event to the CBD, aiming to make pet adoption more accessible to a broader segment of the population. The initiative comes amid growing interest in pet ownership in Singapore, particularly among younger professionals living in the city center. According to AVS, the move reflects a strategic effort to engage a demographic that often lacks easy access to adoption events typically held in suburban areas. Anna Wong, group director of community animal management at AVS, emphasized the importance of making adoption opportunities available in high-footfall locations. “By bringing the adoption drive to a central and easily accessible location, we hope to reach a wider audience and inspire more members of the public to consider pet adoption and give these animals the opportunity to find a forever home,” she stated in a press release. The event will include educational components aimed at informing potential adopters about responsible pet ownership. Visitors will have the opportunity to interact with AVS staff who will provide guidance on dog training and general pet care. On August 28, Every Stray Matters, a local organization focused on stray dog management, will host a talk on its dog fostering program. The session aims to educate attendees on the benefits of fostering dogs and how it contributes to managing Singapore’s community dog population. In addition to adoption opportunities, the event will offer a range of activities designed to entertain both humans and their pets. A DIY dog toy workshop will allow participants to create toys for their pets, while a treasure hunt for dogs will challenge owners to guide their pets through a series of tasks to locate hidden treats. A competitive event called the Paw Race will see dogs and their owners compete against other teams in a friendly race. There will also be a contest titled “Best Ridiculously Dressed Owner and Dog,” offering prizes for the most creatively dressed pairs. To support free-roaming dogs in the area, caricature artists will be present throughout the event, with half of the proceeds from their work going toward feeding these animals. This aspect of the event highlights AVS’s commitment to addressing the challenges faced by strays while promoting responsible pet ownership.
