The road ahead on the Sibiu HighwayPetești: a new tunnel has entered service

The third tunnel on the second section of the Sibiu–Pitești highway has entered the construction phase, with work now underway simultaneously on three tunnels in the mountainous area of the future highway. Approximately 562 workers and 155 machines are deployed on the site, according to CNAIR's director.

The third tunnel on the Boița–Cornetu section of the Sibiu–Pitești highway has officially entered the construction phase. This marks a significant milestone in the ongoing development of one of Romania’s most ambitious infrastructure projects. The Sibiu–Pitești highway, part of the larger A1 motorway network, aims to connect Transylvania with Wallachia, crossing through the Carpathian Mountains. With this new phase beginning, work is now being carried out simultaneously on three tunnels within the mountainous segment of the future highway.

The project involves multiple components, including seven tunnels totaling approximately five kilometers in length, as well as 24 bridges and 24 viaducts spanning around 11 kilometers. The entire second section of the highway, stretching 31.33 kilometers between Boița and Cornetu, has been awarded to the Mapa–Cengiz consortium under a contract valued at 4.25 billion lei, excluding VAT. Construction efforts have intensified, with over 562 workers and 155 pieces of machinery currently deployed on-site.

Work on the newly activated tunnel, known as Balota, has already begun, with initial excavations reaching 16 meters. This tunnel will serve as the exit portal for the area. Meanwhile, progress continues on two other tunnels—Robești and Boița. At Robești, physical completion stands at 36 percent, with both galleries fully excavated. The next steps involve hydro-isolation and concrete pouring. In contrast, the Boița tunnel has seen 87 meters of excavation on one gallery and 21 meters on the other, placing its overall progress at roughly 17 percent.

According to the director of CNAIR, the national agency responsible for managing the project, the current stage of the entire section is at 11.63 percent. However, the upcoming critical phase does not depend solely on the contractor but rather on administrative approvals. Specifically, the revised Environmental Agreement must be approved by the Ministry of Environment before construction permits can be issued. This bureaucratic hurdle could potentially delay further progress unless resolved promptly.

The Boița–Cornetu section is widely regarded as the most challenging portion of the Sibiu–Pitești highway due to the complex terrain it traverses. It forms part of the mountainous stretch of the A1 motorway, which is crucial for connecting major regions of Romania. Once completed, the highway is expected to significantly reduce travel times and improve transportation efficiency between central and southern parts of the country.

The project falls under the broader framework of the National Transport Program, aimed at modernizing Romania's road infrastructure. Given the scale and complexity of the undertaking, the involvement of numerous stakeholders—including government agencies, environmental authorities, and private contractors—highlights the multifaceted nature of such large-scale infrastructure developments. Each component, from tunnel excavation to bridge construction, requires careful coordination and adherence to strict regulatory standards.

As the project moves forward, attention will remain focused on the approval process for the revised Environmental Agreement. Delays in obtaining these approvals could impact the timeline for completing the entire section. Nonetheless, the activation of the third tunnel signifies steady progress toward the ultimate goal of finishing the Sibiu–Pitești highway. With continued investment and cooperation among all parties involved, the realization of this vital link in Romania’s transport network remains within reach.
