Aprilia's Martin extends championship lead with British GP sprint win

Jorge Martin secured a commanding victory in the British Grand Prix sprint at Silverstone on Saturday, extending his MotoGP championship lead. The Spanish rider, representing Aprilia, led from the start to finish, converting his pole position into a dominant 10-lap win. This triumph saw the Italian manufacturer dominate the podium, with Trackhouse rider Ai Ogura finishing second and Martin’s teammate Marco Bezzecchi claiming third. The result marked an all-Aprilia one-two-three finish, reinforcing the team’s strength in the current season. Martin’s win brought his championship total to 220 points, widening his lead over second-place Ogura by 17 points. Bezzecchi, meanwhile, climbed to third in the standings, edging out Marc Marquez, who has been struggling with his title hopes. Marquez, riding for Ducati, started sixth but finished ninth due to severe tyre wear, leaving him 29 points behind Martin heading into Sunday’s race. His performance was a major setback for his bid to reclaim the championship. Martin expressed his satisfaction with the outcome, stating that the effort put in during the summer paid off. He praised his team’s work and described the race as “incredible.” The Spaniard set the fastest lap time in qualifying and maintained a steady pace throughout the race, though he admitted managing tyre degradation was crucial. “I had no rear tyre grip at the end,” he said, noting that despite this challenge, he managed to hold off Ogura and secure another sprint victory. The race saw several dramatic moments behind the leaders. Marquez, the reigning world champion, initially made contact with Bezzecchi at the start but recovered to move up to fourth. However, his afternoon took a turn for the worse as Aprilia’s superior cornering speed allowed Bezzecchi to pass him on lap five and pull away. Marquez’s struggles continued as tyre wear affected his pace, enabling his younger brother Alex to overtake him, followed by KTM’s Pedro Acosta, Joan Mir, and Franco Morbidelli. Marquez ultimately finished ninth, with Ducati mechanics inspecting his rear tyre shortly after his pit stop. The day was dominated by Aprilia, with Martin and Bezzecchi both showing resilience under pressure. Bezzecchi, returning from a collarbone injury, rode through pain to claim his podium finish. Emotional after the race, he thanked his team and supporters for their support during his recovery. “It was a tough period, as you probably can imagine,” he said. “So it was very important to come back and enjoy on the bike. We did a very good job.” Despite the dominance of Aprilia, there were signs of disruption for Ducati. The team had previously won the last three sprints at Silverstone, but this time their best result came from Gresini Racing’s Alex Marquez, who finished fourth. VR46 Racing’s Fabio Di Giannantonio placed fifth, highlighting the challenges faced by Ducati in maintaining its competitive edge.
