Another woman dies after childbirth complications in Rajasthan's Jodhpur amid probe

Another woman has died following complications from a Caesarean section in Rajasthan, bringing the number of maternal fatalities linked to childbirth issues in the state to at least four this year. The incident occurred at Mahatma Gandhi Hospital in Jodhpur, according to local media reports. The deceased, identified as Samu, succumbed to her injuries on July 19, marking yet another tragic chapter in a troubling trend of maternal mortality in the region. Samu gave birth to a healthy female child at Tinwari Hospital near Jodhpur on June 24 through a normal delivery. However, she began experiencing heavy postpartum bleeding, leading medical staff to refer her to Umaid Hospital in Jodhpur. Despite efforts to control the hemorrhage, the bleeding persisted, necessitating the removal of her uterus. Her condition continued to decline, prompting a transfer to Mahatma Gandhi Hospital, where she required ventilator support and dialysis. By July 14, her health had significantly deteriorated, and she passed away five days later. Dr Fateh Singh, superintendent of Mahatma Gandhi Hospital, stated that Samu suffered from hypovolemic shock caused by excessive blood loss after childbirth. This condition led to impaired blood flow to essential organs. He noted that while the initial delivery was uncomplicated, the uncontrolled bleeding posed a life-threatening risk. “She had a normal delivery at Tinwari Hospital and delivered a baby girl. As the bleeding from her uterus did not stop, she was referred to Jodhpur. When the bleeding could not be controlled, her uterus was removed at Umaid Hospital. Her condition did not improve,” he explained. This incident follows several other cases of maternal deaths attributed to childbirth complications. On June 28 and July 2, two women were transferred from Bhopalgarh to Umaid Hospital and died due to similar issues, primarily related to excessive bleeding. Currently, seven women remain hospitalized at Jodhpur’s two main maternity facilities. Five of these patients are receiving intensive treatment at Umaid Hospital, while two are under observation in the intensive care unit at Mahatma Gandhi Hospital. Among the seven, three have been diagnosed with severe kidney infections, adding to the complexity of their conditions. One of the admitted women reportedly deteriorated after receiving an incorrect blood transfusion at a government hospital in Jodhpur. While the exact circumstances surrounding this case remain unclear, it highlights ongoing challenges in ensuring safe and accurate medical procedures during childbirth. Authorities have expressed growing concern over the pattern of maternal deaths, citing systemic issues that may contribute to such outcomes. Hospital officials have acknowledged the severity of the situation, noting that multiple women continue to require urgent care despite interventions. The recent deaths underscore the need for improved emergency response protocols and better resource allocation in maternity wards across Rajasthan. Further investigations into the incidents are underway, with officials emphasizing the importance of identifying root causes to prevent future tragedies.
