Ankaran would be protected from seawater intrusion by a new dam.

The Ministry of Environment is preparing a permanent solution to prevent seawater intrusion into agricultural land in Ankaran. This involves constructing a new barrier on the coastal canal, which would ensure flood protection while allowing safe irrigation. The temporary barrier has been effective so far, maintaining water levels and enabling farmers to irrigate their crops. However, the lower section of the canal currently allows unrestricted flow of seawater, preventing safe irrigation. Local authorities have repeatedly called for urgent action, citing past incidents where seawater flooded fields during heavy rains and high tides. The local municipality accused the main investor, Port of Koper, of inadequate measures, but the port denied these claims, stating that improvements in flood safety were achieved through expanding and deepening the canal. Despite this, they promised additional protective measures for the most vulnerable residential areas.
