Andrea DeCruz and Pierre Png reflect on her liver transplant, their marriage and overcoming fears

Andrea DeCruz and Pierre Png, a Singaporean couple known for their candid reflections on personal challenges, recently discussed their past experiences in a special episode of CNA Insider’s On The Red Dot. The conversation centered around Andrea’s 2002 liver transplant, the role Pierre played in saving her life, and how these events shaped their relationship and lives over the past two decades. Andrea, 52, recounted how she nearly lost her life due to severe liver failure. At the time, she was working extensively as an actress and entrepreneur, and she initially dismissed her symptoms as mere fatigue. It wasn’t until her sister, who had previously worked with the National Kidney Foundation, noticed her jaundiced skin and urged her to seek medical attention that she realized the severity of her condition. After a series of tests, doctors confirmed her liver was inflamed, and she was admitted to hospital on April 11. By May 7, she required a liver transplant. During her hospital stay, she expressed a sense of acceptance, telling a visiting priest that if God called her away, she would be ready, having led a fulfilled life. Pierre, 52, donated part of his liver to save Andrea’s life. At the time, they were not related by blood, and hospital staff sought to establish an emotional bond between them. Pierre had proposed to Andrea shortly before the transplant, and the couple eventually married within 16 to 17 months of the surgery. Andrea explained that they decided to marry quickly because they had just undergone a life-altering experience together. “We had just gone through something very life-changing,” she said. “The transplant was a success. Her body accepted the liver, and we got married as soon as possible.” During the interview, the couple reflected on their 23-year-long marriage, including moments of vulnerability. When asked if she ever considered whether they could last so long, Andrea tearfully responded, “Honestly, I never really gave it any thought. When we got married, I definitely hoped that we would last a lifetime until our last day on earth.” She emphasized that she had placed great trust in Pierre during her illness, calling him the best person to have around during difficult times. “When he's calm, I'm calm. I draw a lot of strength from him, and I think that helps in anyone's recovery process,” she said. As part of the episode, the couple attempted several physical challenges to symbolize their journey of overcoming fears. Andrea first descended Split Rock Summit, an attraction at Rainforest Wild Adventure, despite her lingering fear of heights. After completing the descent, Pierre encouraged her to try the Giant Swing at Skypark Sentosa, an activity offered by AJ Hackett. Andrea agreed, and the pair took on the challenge together. “Having Pierre by my side is everything. The courage always comes from him,” she said. “If this were my last day and he asked me to do something extreme, I would do it with him because I have him to hang on to for dear life.” Their story highlights not only the resilience of individuals facing serious health crises but also the profound impact of love and support in navigating such challenges.
