Algeria’s north-east scorched by deadly wildfires, national mourning declared

Wildfires have devastated parts of northeastern Algeria, resulting in at least 12 deaths and numerous injuries. The fires, which occurred around 26-27 August, were captured on video by an Instagram user in Agbala village and documented by Algeria’s Civil Protection Service. In Bordj Tahar, one of the hardest-hit areas, residents began returning to their homes and farmland after initial efforts to restore electricity. Over 400 animals were reported dead, and several nearby villages were impacted. Interior Minister Saïd Sayoud provided casualty figures, noting five deaths in Jijel, four in Béjaïa, and three in Tizi Ouzou, with 54 others hospitalized. Prime Minister Sifi Ghrieb visited the region to evaluate the damage, and President Abdelmadjid Tebboune announced three days of national mourning, including flag-lowering and event cancellations.
