Ownership

Euronews is a pan-European news channel headquartered in Lyon, France, launched in 1993 by a consortium of European public broadcasters. Since 2022 a controlling majority stake has been held by Alpac Capital, a Lisbon-based private investment fund run by Pedro Vargas David and Luis Santos, which bought out Egyptian telecoms billionaire Naguib Sawiris's Media Globe Networks (the previous majority owner since 2017). A minority residual stake remains with the founding European public-broadcaster shareholders.

Funding

It is financed commercially through advertising and distribution/carriage deals, plus content-service contracts and grants from the European Union to produce certain European-affairs programming. Since the Alpac takeover it operates as a privately owned commercial broadcaster rather than a subsidy-funded one.

Affiliation & stance

Euronews positions itself as a neutral pan-European outlet, and as a privately and commercially owned company with no party or state control it qualifies as INDEPENDENT, matching the site's current label. That said, the 2022 sale drew scrutiny because Alpac Capital's leadership has reported links to figures around Hungary's Orban government, so its independence has been questioned even though it is not formally state- or party-owned.

Iran FM confirms reports Israel planned to target Tehran's negotiators

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi confirmed reports that U.S. officials believed Israel may have attempted to assassinate Iran's top negotiators during ceasefire talks with the United States in Pakistan. The talks, mediated by U.S. Vice President JD Vance, resulted in a framework deal signed on 17 June to halt hostilities. Both nations are now observing a 60-day extended ceasefire to facilitate a final agreement. U.S. concerns over threats to Araghchi and parliament speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf escalated during earlier negotiations, prompting Washington to alert regional allies about potential Israeli targeting. The New York Times and The Washington Post reported heightened security measures, including Pakistani fighter jet escorts for the Iranian delegation and an emergency landing due to perceived Israeli threats. The conflict began on 28 February with U.S.-Israeli strikes that killed Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and other senior Iranian officials. Neither the U.S. nor Israeli governments have officially commented on the alleged assassination plot.

The first 18 days of the expanded tournament, which includes 48 nations, have delivered exciting moments, with some teams impressing while others disappointing. The introduction of breaks for rest has been expected to bring additional revenue, potentially adding 500 million euros to FIFA’s coffers. Fans have seen more goals than average over the past decade, with 215 goals scored in regular time across three matches. France leads the scoring table with the highest goal difference, maintaining its position among top favorites. Cristiano Ronaldo surpassed Eusebio’s record for Portugal, while Lionel Messi continues to lead the scoring charts with six goals. There is speculation about whether Kylian Mbappé could surpass Messi’s all-time record if he scores 19 goals. The competition promises more thrilling matches, especially between Messi and Ronaldo, though both face challenging paths to the final.

Venezuela's interim leader defends earthquake response as death toll tops 2,500

Venezuela's acting president, Delcy Rodríguez, defended her government's response to two powerful earthquakes that struck on 24 June 2026, killing over 2,500 people and damaging hundreds of buildings. Despite criticism over the pace and coordination of relief efforts, Rodríguez denied allegations of underreporting deaths and blamed the media for exploiting the crisis. Satellite imagery suggested the damage might be worse than officially recorded, while reports of potential UN aid shipments raised questions about transparency. Opposition groups claimed over 38,000 people were missing, and Rodríguez rejected claims that victims were left to search for survivors without assistance. The disaster highlights challenges facing Rodríguez, whose interim leadership is nearing its end, and underscores ongoing tensions between the government and critics. International aid has been welcomed, including from the U.S., Ecuador, and Israel, as search operations transitioned to body recovery.
