Coyoacán mayor's office removes more than 1,400 vehicles from public roads; chatarization efforts continue

The city government of Coyoacán has removed over 1,400 vehicles from public roads as part of ongoing efforts to combat illegal dumping and improve urban safety. The operation, carried out by municipal authorities, marks another step in their campaign against vehicle abandonment, which has been intensified since the start of the current administration. Since the beginning of its first term, the administration has conducted 65 operations targeting abandoned vehicles, resulting in more than nine thousand actions taken against illegal parking and vehicle abandonment. During this period, officials have made 13,000 visual inspections, issued warnings to 7,519 vehicles, and removed 1,412 units using tow trucks. These measures aim to address the growing issue of vehicles left unattended on streets, which can become breeding grounds for crime and unsanitary conditions. Mayor Giovani Gutiérrez emphasized that these efforts contribute to improving the urban landscape and ensuring free movement through the district’s streets. He noted that the initiatives align with the successful “Escudo Coyoacán” security policy, which focuses on proactive community protection. Gutiérrez highlighted the importance of collaboration with both federal and local governments, stating that the municipality works closely with other agencies to ensure effective enforcement. The city's General Director of Citizen Security, Aurora Monserrat Cruz Ramírez, explained that the initiative goes beyond simply removing vehicles from public spaces. She stressed that the program involves addressing a broader issue requiring continuous monitoring and coordination among different authorities. According to her, there is a consistent commitment to working with the City Government and scheduling multi-day operations to carry out necessary removals. These operations target vehicles that have already been identified and warned about by relevant departments, following established priority criteria. The process begins with identifying vehicles that meet specific conditions for removal, such as being parked illegally for extended periods or posing a risk to public safety. Once flagged, these vehicles undergo inspection and, if found to comply with removal criteria, are towed to a designated storage facility. This approach ensures that resources are used efficiently while maintaining compliance with legal standards. Residents and local businesses have generally welcomed the increased presence of municipal teams during these operations. Many expressed relief at seeing fewer abandoned vehicles clogging streets and contributing to environmental degradation. Some residents also noted improvements in neighborhood aesthetics and reduced incidents related to unsafe parking practices. Authorities continue to plan further operations, with schedules set for additional rounds of vehicle removals. These plans include coordinating with neighboring municipalities and reinforcing partnerships with law enforcement agencies to enhance overall effectiveness. The goal remains to maintain clean and safe public spaces while supporting long-term urban development strategies. As the campaign progresses, officials remain focused on enforcing regulations consistently and transparently.
