Coyoacán nurseries closed after heavy rains; report water saturation and flooding

The Parque Nacional Viveros de Coyoacán in Mexico City was closed on Saturday, August 8, following heavy rains that caused water saturation and pooling within its grounds. The closure was announced by the Secretariat of Environment and Natural Resources (Semarnat), led by Alicia Bárcena, through social media. The decision followed several days of intense rainfall, which prompted preventive measures to ensure visitor safety and allow for maintenance work, including drainage, cleaning, and plant health checks. The closure marks the second time this year that the park has been temporarily shut due to weather-related issues. In May, Semarnat had previously closed the facility after heavy rains raised water levels in the Río San Buenaventura and Río Magdalena. This time, similar conditions were observed, with reports indicating that rainwater had saturated the soil and created standing pools throughout the park’s premises. According to officials, the area is particularly vulnerable to flooding during periods of high precipitation. The National Water Management Secretariat (Segiagua) deployed teams to address waterlogging in multiple boroughs, including Álvaro Obregón, Benito Juárez, Coyoacán, Cuajimalpa de Morelos, Iztacalco, Tlalpan, and Venustiano Carranza. These efforts included pumping excess water, clearing debris, and conducting continuous monitoring. The incident occurred just one day before the park's closure, as heavy rainfall caused damage in at least nine districts, leading to flooded streets, fallen trees, landslides, collapsed walls, and runoff. The Viveros de Coyoacán is a federal park managed by Semarnat and serves as a key ecological and sustainability hub for the city. It houses greenhouses and commercial nurseries open to the public, along with national institutes focused on forestry and agriculture research. The park also includes facilities operated by Semarnat itself. Its location in the Coyoacán borough makes it a popular destination for both locals and tourists seeking access to nature and educational resources. Officials have stated that updates regarding the park’s condition will be released later on the same day. They expressed gratitude for visitors' understanding and cooperation during this period of disruption. The closure highlights the challenges faced by urban green spaces in managing extreme weather events, especially in a densely populated metropolis like Mexico City. The recent weather patterns reflect broader climate trends affecting the region, with increasing frequency of heavy downpours linked to changing seasonal patterns.
