Alarming in Europe: Rivers are drying up, tens of thousands of people without drinking water

European rivers have reached alarmingly low levels this summer, with hundreds of thousands of people facing water shortages. Major European rivers such as the Rhine, Thames, Danube, Rhône, and Po have recorded flow rates unseen in over three decades. In July alone, nearly 95 percent of the Thames, 85 percent of the Rhine, and 65 percent of the Danube saw their lowest flows since 1992, according to data from the Copernicus Climate Change Service. The Rhône also hit record lows, reaching just 30 percent of its usual flow, while the Po River, Italy’s largest, dropped by approximately 40 percent. The extreme drought conditions are attributed to prolonged dry spells, unusually high temperatures, and repeated heatwaves during the early part of the summer. Western Europe has experienced one of the hottest starts to the season on record, exacerbating the situation. Wildfires have further compounded the crisis, consuming large areas of forest and reducing available water resources. The Rhine has been particularly affected, remaining in severe hydrological drought conditions for much of its course from Swiss Alps to western Germany. The Danube has also suffered significantly, especially in Hungary, where low water levels have impacted the operation of the country's sole nuclear power plant, which relies on river water for reactor cooling. Similarly, parts of the Loire River in France have seen extremely low flows, affecting both ecological and human systems. In response to the worsening crisis, French authorities have imposed restrictions on water usage across almost 70 percent of the country’s territory. These measures include limiting irrigation, car washing, and filling swimming pools. On Monday, the French government announced emergency measures, and a crisis meeting was called for Wednesday. According to the Ministry of Ecological Transition, climate change continues to worsen the water resource challenges faced by the nation. As of August 9, all 99 departments in France’s European region are under some level of preparedness, with 67 classified as being in crisis, the highest alert level, and 21 in heightened readiness. When a crisis state is declared, water reserves are primarily allocated for health, public safety, drinking water supply, and hygiene needs. Depending on the warning level, restrictions can range from temporary limitations on garden watering to complete bans on certain uses. French Environment Minister Monique Barbut warned on July 27 that access to clean water was problematic in 47 departments. Temporary restrictions on water supply via taps had already affected more than 30,000 residents in 80 communes. Some households were forced to rely on tankers for water or used bottled water. The situation has continued to deteriorate, prompting plans for a meeting with members of the Hydrological Forecasting and Monitoring Committee and regional prefects. At the meeting, officials will present the latest assessment of the national hydrological status and evaluate the impacts of the prolonged drought on various water uses across different regions. Particular attention will be given to the effects of water scarcity on plant and animal life. The ongoing crisis highlights the growing vulnerability of water resources in the face of changing climatic patterns.
