Fires raging in Spain again: Fire consumes an area the size of four Zagrebs

A massive forest fire raged out of control in southern Spain on Monday, consuming an area four times the size of Zagreb, according to regional authorities. The blaze, which has already scorched nearly 20,000 hectares in the province of Huelva, near the medieval town of Niebla, continues to defy efforts by firefighters to bring it under control. High temperatures and strong winds have fueled the spread of other fires across the country, making containment efforts increasingly difficult. The fire, described by officials as a race against time, has forced the evacuation of almost 500 residents from the surrounding areas. Antonio Sanz, head of the emergency services department, likened the firefighting operation to “a long-distance race with obstacles,” warning that it could take several days before the situation stabilizes. He noted that powerful gusts of wind on rugged terrain scatter flames in all directions, creating new, secondary fire zones that further complicate efforts to contain the blaze. This latest outbreak follows a series of heatwaves that have gripped much of Europe this summer. According to data from the European Forest Fire Information System (EFFIS), over 244,000 hectares of natural areas have burned in Spain so far this year, a landmass four times larger than Zagreb. This figure represents six times the amount burned during the same period last year, highlighting the severity of the current fire season. Scientists attribute these extreme conditions to both record-breaking heat and drought, exacerbated by climate change. These factors have led to serious disruptions in electricity production, maritime transport, and public health systems across the continent. In Spain, additional wildfires continue to pose threats, particularly in central provinces such as Segovia and southeastern Castellón. In Segovia, a fire broke out on Saturday after a vehicle caught fire on a motorway, forcing 176 residents of two villages to flee their homes. Local authorities reported on Monday that the situation had improved slightly due to increased humidity overnight, though they warned that the dense vegetation covered by granite rock might hinder firefighting operations. Meanwhile, in Castellón, a fire has consumed approximately 800 hectares and prompted the evacuation of 900 people. Although the fire remains active, local authorities stated that it is close to stabilization following “very favorable” weather conditions during the night. Officials in the Valencia region emphasized that while progress has been made, the threat of further outbreaks persists due to ongoing dryness and high temperatures. As the summer progresses, authorities warn that the risk of more wildfires remains elevated. With continued heat and arid conditions, the challenge of managing these incidents will likely persist throughout the season. Emergency services remain on high alert, working tirelessly to protect communities and restore ecological balance amid the growing crisis.

Why factuality (85): The article reports on a large wildfire in southern Spain, citing regional authorities and official figures such as the area burned (20,000 hectares) and the evacuation of nearly 500 people. It references the European Forest Fire Information System (EFFIS) for comparative data on fire areas, alignin

Why objectivity (78): The article presents the situation in a generally neutral tone, using descriptive language to explain the challenges faced by firefighters and the impact of weather conditions. However, it includes phrases like 'razornom sezonom šumskih požara' (destructive fire season) and mentions scientists stati
