From the seabed to space, the European Commission would strengthen the EU's defence industry

The European Commission announced five joint defense projects aimed at strengthening the EU’s defense industry and capabilities. These projects focus on drones and counter-drone systems, maritime security, space defense, air and missile defense, and securing the eastern flank of the EU. The European Defense Industrial Program (EDIP), funded with €1.5 billion, allocated €325 million to these initiatives. The goal is to pool resources across member states, aligning with NATO standards, with an average of 18 countries participating in each project, including Ukraine in four cases. Hungary is involved only in the counter-drone initiative. The European Council will define project goals and participation criteria, while Andrius Kubilius, the EU’s Commissioner for Defense and Space, emphasized their importance for enhancing EU defense readiness and strategic autonomy. The program was adopted in December 2025, partly due to Russian aggression in Ukraine and U.S. withdrawal, and is open to non-EU countries like Ukraine and Norway.
