Ownership

Rzeczpospolita is a conservative-leaning quality daily; the present title dates from 14 January 1982 (a predecessor existed in interwar Poland from 1920). It is published by Gremi Media S.A., long associated with Polish entrepreneur Grzegorz Hajdarowicz, who bought out the State Treasury and Mecom stakes in 2011. Since 2021-2023 the Dutch press-freedom investment fund Pluralis B.V. (backed by the Media Development Investment Fund and George-Soros-linked and other European investors) has acquired a majority stake of about 52%, replacing Hajdarowicz's KCI as the largest shareholder.

Funding

It is funded commercially through newspaper sales, a digital subscription paywall on rp.pl, advertising and its specialist legal/business publishing; Pluralis is a mission-driven private investor rather than a state or party backer.

Affiliation & stance

Editorially it is centre-right/conservative and business-oriented but not a party organ. With privately held, commercially funded ownership (now majority Pluralis) and no government, party or church control, it is INDEPENDENT.

The dispute over politics has ceased to be about issues, it has become a declaration of identity.

The article discusses the increasing polarization in Polish politics, arguing that debates have shifted from substantive policy discussions to identity-based declarations. The author draws on Carl Jung's theory of the 'shadow'—the part of ourselves we deny—to explain how our political emotions are closely tied to what we envy or fear in others. Political discourse has become symbolic rather than analytical, with policies seen as signals of personal values rather than practical solutions. The author notes that both liberals and conservatives have moved closer to the center on major issues like security, the war in Ukraine, and migration, though they remain wary of each other's positions. While skeptical about overcoming polarization, the author finds hope in Hannah Arendt's belief in human unpredictability.

In 15 regions of Russia, restrictions on the sale of fuel were introduced for 24 hours

At least 15 regions in Russia implemented fuel sales restrictions on June 23 due to a fuel shortage caused by attacks on oil refining facilities by Ukrainian drones. The restrictions include limiting fuel purchases to specific volumes per person and banning refueling into cans. These measures were introduced in major regions such as Khanty-Mansiysk, Belgorod, Bryansk, Kursk, Tyumen, Novosibirsk, Saratov, Penza, Omsk, Voronezh, Murmansk, and Krasnoyarsk. Authorities cited the need to prevent artificial shortages and excessive demand. In Irkutsk Oblast, some gas stations imposed limits while others stopped operating entirely. Governor Igor Kobzev initially linked the fuel shortage to drone strikes but later removed this statement. In Vladimir Oblast, residents were urged to reduce car travel, and in North Ossetia, authorities ordered the creation of an emergency fuel reserve. Deputy Prime Minister Alexander Novak described the situation as 'not simple but controlled,' attributing regional restrictions to temporary logistical issues. Fuel sales have effectively halted in Crimea after an attack on a logistics hub in the Kerch Strait, with the Russian Federal Antimonopoly Service also禁止

An American gets the maximum amount of recovery time at Wimbledon.

The article discusses the scheduling of the first-round doubles match at Wimbledon involving American tennis player Serena Williams and her sister Venus Williams against the Argentine-Colombian pair Solana Sierra and Camila Osorio. The match was initially scheduled for Thursday and Friday but has been postponed due to Serena's injury during her singles match. Tournament organizer Andy Murray (likely a misstatement, as Andy Murray is a British player, and the correct name might be someone like Ashley Barker or another official) stated they are giving Serena as much time as possible to recover. They ruled out postponing the match to later dates unless necessary for safety or tournament flow. The match is expected to take place on a larger court to accommodate the large crowd attracted by Serena and Venus, who are major stars. Serena returned to professional tennis after four years, but she lost her first singles match and injured her knee. She did not attend a press conference afterward due to health reasons and expressed her commitment to participating in the doubles event. Serena and Venus have won six doubles titles together, including a title in 2016.

Ukraine reports two dead after night attacks by Russia, with the death toll in Kiev rising to 30.

At least two people were killed and eight injured in Russian air strikes on the Sumy region and Kryvyj Rih in Ukraine during the night of Thursday to Friday, according to Ukrainian authorities. This follows a large-scale Russian attack on Kyiv earlier in the week which killed at least 30 people and injured around 100 others. In response to the attacks, Ukraine conducted missile strikes on Belgorod in Russia, causing a fire at an energy facility and killing one woman, according to Russian media. The overnight strike on the city of Romny in the Sumy region hit a residential building, killing two women and injuring a man, reported regional administrator Oleh Hryhorov via Telegram. Another seven people were injured in a missile strike on Kryvyj Rih, according to military city administrator Oleksandr Vilkul. In Kyiv, teams discovered three more dead bodies during the night, bringing the total number of victims to 30, according to Reuters citing Ukrainian health authorities. Kyiv's military administrator Tymur Tkačenko stated that the attack injured 99 people. Moscow claimed the extensive attack was a response to Ukrainian strikes on Russian energy infrastructure, including those carried

In the tropical Pacific, El Niño conditions have set in, researchers say.

The article reports that researchers from New Zealand’s Earth Sciences organization (ESNZ) have identified conditions consistent with the El Niño climate phenomenon in the tropical Pacific. They warn that impacts on New Zealand’s weather are likely to intensify over the coming months. The ESNZ joined other organizations in Australia, Japan, and the U.S. in confirming the development of El Niño, which is expected to reach strong intensity between July and September. The effects are projected to peak during the Southern Hemisphere summer, spanning late 2023 into early 2024. According to lead researcher Chris Brandolini, this El Niño event is at least comparable in strength to five of the strongest recorded El Niños in modern history. The article outlines regional rainfall expectations, noting potential below-average precipitation in some areas and above-normal levels in others. It also mentions possible temperature fluctuations and increased wind variability later in the year. Additionally, it notes two lower-probability risks: sudden stratospheric warming and the occurrence of a tropical cyclone outside the typical season, both historically linked to El Niño. Brandolini connects the

IJHARS inspected the fish fryers.

The Polish Food Inspection Authority (IJHARS) conducted inspections of fish fry restaurants and found significant issues in most establishments. Out of 50 inspected locations, 38 had irregularities, including incorrect menu information, lack of allergen data, inaccurate portion weights, and substitution of cheaper fish species for those advertised. Laboratory tests revealed that 11.9% of product samples were questioned due to mislabeling, such as selling limanda as sole or substituting cod with other species. While the taste, smell, and texture of the fish were acceptable, inspectors imposed fines ranging from 500 zł for violations.

Faster registration of utility models.Experts warn of the effects of changes

The Polish Ministry of Development and Technology, in collaboration with the Office for Patents and Trademarks (UP), has proposed changes to the Industrial Property Law aimed at streamlining the registration process for utility models. Currently, the procedure takes over two years on average, which is problematic since protection lasts only 10 years from the date of submission. The new system would replace the current examination process with a registration-based approach, potentially speeding up approvals. However, legal experts warn that these changes might lead to unintended consequences.

"Such a gift for Santa". There was an announcement about Trzaskowski.

The article discusses plans by organizers to hold a referendum in Warsaw regarding the removal of Rafał Trzaskowski as mayor. Maciej Wilk, president of the association 'Tak dla CPK' and the Polish Development Foundation, stated that collecting over 132,000 valid signatures from Warsaw residents would be a significant organizational challenge. The organizers aim to collect more than 150,000 signatures to account for potential rejections during verification. They plan to start the official collection in late July, preparing volunteers, funding, and materials beforehand. The campaign will primarily take place on the streets, with social media used for mobilization. The referendum could potentially occur around Christmas if the timeline allows. Wilk mentioned that the situation at the Southern Hospital was a catalyst but not the sole reason for the initiative.

Rhys has appointed a commission to investigate cases of child abuse.

Cardinal Grzegorz Ryś, the Archbishop of Krakow, has established a commission called 'Hearing and Clarification' to investigate cases of sexual exploitation of adults in vulnerable or dependent situations within the institutional Church in the Archdiocese of Krakow since 1945. The commission aims to address historical cases where legal or canonical proceedings are no longer possible due to factors like the death of the accused or statute of limitations. It will focus on analyzing documents from the Metropolitan Curia Archives in Krakow and other archives, using psychological knowledge and canon law norms. The commission will operate independently, with the Archbishop ensuring access to archival materials and avoiding interference. Its work includes developing methodologies for contacting victims and handling reports, with results compiled into a report for the Archbishop and, where possible, made public while protecting personal data and the safety of victims.

EU to accept all goods banned in Russia

The European Union has announced new trade measures favoring Armenia, reducing tariffs on nearly all Armenian agricultural products and alcohol exports to EU countries. This decision comes after Russia imposed sanctions on Armenian goods, aiming to pressure Armenia to distance itself from Western institutions. The move is seen as a countermeasure by the EU against Russian economic influence over Armenia. The EU’s Commission President, Ursula von der Leyen, emphasized that these measures would open doors for Armenian producers and support their integration into the EU market. Premier Nikol Pashinyan praised the EU as a reliable partner and expressed hope for swift implementation, especially during the harvest season. The shift marks a significant step in Armenia’s efforts to diversify its trade relationships away from Russia.

The EU's new budget: more to share, but on different terms

The European Union has proposed a new multiannual financial framework for the period 2028–2034, totaling nearly 2 trillion euros—about 1.26% of the EU’s gross national income—which represents a nearly 10% increase compared to the previous budget cycle (2021–2027). This new budget emphasizes greater flexibility over rigid allocations, aiming to address ongoing crises such as geopolitical threats and energy shocks. The traditional 'national envelope' model, which allocated funds based on national contributions, is being replaced with centrally managed instruments like the European Competitiveness Fund, aimed at funding innovation, digitalization, and green transformation. Poland faces a shift in strategy, requiring more active engagement with Brussels to secure funding rather than relying solely on national and regional allocations. A significant portion of the new budget focuses on defense and military mobility, with a ninefold increase in spending on security and space, reaching up to 131 billion euros. Military mobility investments are expected to rise from 2 billion to 18 billion euros, with three out of four strategic corridors in Europe passing through Poland, offering major投资和
