Ownership

CartaCapital is a Brazilian weekly newsmagazine founded in 1994 by Italian-Brazilian journalist Mino Carta, who earlier helped create Veja and IstoÉ. It is published by Editora Confiança, a privately held company associated with the Carta family and the magazine's own management, and is not part of a large media conglomerate.

Funding

It is financed through subscriptions and digital memberships, newsstand sales and advertising, supplemented at times by reader support campaigns. It has no party or state funding stream.

Affiliation & stance

CartaCapital is openly left-wing and has editorially supported the Workers' Party (PT), backing Lula's and Dilma Rousseff's candidacies, which gives it a clear partisan-aligned stance even though it is privately owned. Because it is a commercially owned magazine not controlled by the party, state or an oligarch, it is INDEPENDENT, while its self-declared left lean is accurate.

Kassio will meet with institutes and big techs after suspending Atlas research

The president of Brazil's Electoral Supreme Court, Kassio Nunes Marques, has scheduled meetings with research institutes and major technology companies on July 14 and 16 to discuss rules for electoral surveys and strategies to combat disinformation. This follows the suspension of a survey by AtlasIntel that indicated a decline in the performance of Senator Flávio Bolsonaro, a presidential candidate from the PL party. The survey was criticized for potentially influencing respondents by playing an audio message from Bolsonaro to a banker, which he referred to as his 'brother' and asked for payments related to a film supporting former President Jair Bolsonaro. The court ruled that this could compromise the neutrality of the methodology used in the survey. Additionally, the Electoral Court has approved regulations prohibiting the use of artificial intelligence in the final stages of the election campaign and requiring immediate removal of content that attacks democracy or the electoral system.

Líder da oposição minimiza crise no PL entre Flávio e Michelle

The leader of the opposition in the Chamber of Deputies, Congressman Cabo Gilberto (PL-PB), downplayed the crisis involving members of the Bolsonaro family, stating he believes their disagreements will be resolved before the party conventions. In an interview with CNN Brazil, he expressed confidence that former First Lady Michelle Bolsonaro will run for a Senate seat in the Federal District alongside Deputy Bia Kicis (PL-DF). He acknowledged that the public exposure of tensions between Michelle and Senator Flávio Bolsonaro (PL-RJ) was negative but claimed the situation has been addressed. Internal polling suggests the incident did not significantly harm the political group. Cabo Gilberto reiterated his support for Flávio Bolsonaro as the preferred candidate for the presidential succession, as indicated by former President Jair Bolsonaro. He attributed challenges faced by the group to decisions made by the Supreme Federal Court (STF), citing international court rulings involving allies of the former president as evidence of potential irregularities.

Bolsonaro's defense says there was no felony weapon seizure

The defense of former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro has requested Supreme Court Minister Alexandre de Moraes not to classify the recent seizure of a pistol under his name as a 'serious offense.' The weapon was found during a traffic stop in Brasília inside an official presidential vehicle driven by Army corporal Estácio Leite da Silva Filho. During the stop, the military personnel admitted the gun belonged to Bolsonaro. Following this, Moraes asked the Office of the Attorney General to assess within 48 hours whether the firearm's seizure could affect Bolsonaro’s house arrest, which was set to expire on Friday, June 26. Bolsonaro's lawyers argue the gun was taken from his home for repairs and that the soldier properly informed authorities of its ownership. They claim there was no concealment, tampering, or actions aimed at evading state oversight. Additionally, they assert Bolsonaro was not notified of any potential revocation of the gun's registration or administrative proceedings related to it. They further argue there is no concrete evidence indicating intent or negligence on Bolsonaro's part to violate court orders or penal rules. Finally, they request the STF to dismiss a

Who are the targets of US sanctions for links to the CCP and INSS fraud?

The article discusses U.S. sanctions against Brazilian companies and individuals suspected of ties to the Chinese criminal organization PCC (Primeiro Comando Capixaba) and fraudulent activities related to Brazil's social security system (INSS). The report references a Senate committee investigation (CPMI do INSS) that identified these firms as part of a network involved in money laundering. Specifically, Victory Trading, which received over R$514 million from Wave Intermediações—a company linked to the 'Arpar' network—was sanctioned by the U.S. Treasury Department. The U.S. claims this network operated between São Paulo and Florida, with Victor Shimada allegedly acting as a bridge between the PCC and international drug traffickers. Sanctions include financial isolation and asset freezes in the U.S., marking the first such action against the PCC since it was classified as a terrorist organization. Other entities, including Pixwave Soluções de Pagamentos, Wave Construções Inteligentes, and Portuguese company Avenides Flutuantes Unipessoal, were also targeted. These companies appear in other Brazilian investigations, including those involving the Corinthians football club and testimon

Lula reage à tentativa de Flávio de adiar tarifaço e volta a chamar Bolsonaros de “traidores da pátria”

President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva responded to efforts by Flávio Bolsonaro, son of President Jair Bolsonaro, to urge the United States to delay new tariffs against Brazil. Lula accused Flávio of being subservient to the US and called him a 'traitor to the homeland,' attributing the imposition of tariffs to the Bolsonaro family. Flávio had requested the US administration under Donald Trump to defer the application of 25% import tariffs on Brazilian goods for 180 days, arguing that such measures could strengthen Lula politically ahead of presidential elections. Lula rejected this initiative, calling it 'sellout' behavior and asserting that Brazil negotiates on equal terms with any country. The article notes that the tariffs are based on Section 301 investigations into alleged harm to US interests due to Brazilian trade practices. Flávio’s document claims previous tariffs did not achieve desired outcomes and were used by the Brazilian government as a rhetorical defense of national sovereignty. It also cites opinion polls showing that Lula's electoral position has strengthened during periods of heightened US tariff pressure. Lindbergh Farias, a PT deputy leader in the Chamber of Depe
