Woori Bank data leak affects 17,551 customers

Woori Bank confirmed that the personal information of 17,551 customers was leaked due to an unauthorized retention and upload by an employee at an external software developer. The leaked data included connecting information (CI), an encrypted identifier used for online verification, as well as customer nicknames. Phone numbers, resident registration numbers, and home addresses were not compromised. The data was shared in September 2024 during the development of the bank’s nonfungible token (NFT) platform. The bank became aware of the breach on Tuesday, took steps to block access, reported the incident to the Personal Information Protection Commission, and informed affected customers. While there is no evidence of further distribution, the bank warned that the CI could be exploited if combined with data from other breaches.
