The concern centers around a recent art challenge titled “Paint for Gaza,” which reportedly encouraged children to create artwork featuring the controversial slogan “From the river to the sea.” This phrase, associated with calls for the destruction of the Israeli state, has drawn criticism from multiple international bodies, including German authorities who have criminalized its use. According to the HJS, the complaint was initially made to the Scouts Association, which confirmed it had received the issue and taken the concerns seriously. A spokesperson for the Scouts stated that they have a thorough process in place to investigate such matters impartially and fairly. However, the inquiry is still in its early stages, and the organization has yet to release findings or respond directly to the complainant. The HJS emphasized its deep concern over the circulation of children's artwork containing the slogan, arguing that it undermines the Scouts' commitment to inclusivity and respect for all backgrounds. The “Paint for Gaza” challenge, organized by the MSF, aimed to promote love and kindness toward children in Palestine. Many of the artworks created by participants depicted variations of Al-Aqsa Mosque alongside the Palestinian flag. Some pieces featured maps of Israel replaced with the Palestinian flag, while others incorporated the contentious slogan. These images were shared online, including through an Instagram post that advertised the challenge. The HJS pointed out that the slogan “From the river to the sea” is considered inflammatory and has been outlawed in Germany due to its perceived antisemitic implications. The Scouts Association maintains a policy of political neutrality and explicitly opposes prejudice and discrimination in its code of conduct. Despite these principles, the controversy surrounding the art challenge has sparked debate over whether the organization adequately safeguards against potentially harmful messaging, particularly when involving youth. The HJS expressed disappointment that a Scout-affiliated group could engage in activities that might inadvertently spread divisive rhetoric. The MSF collaborated with Islamic Relief, an organization based in the UK that has faced scrutiny for its alleged links to Hamas and other groups. Islamic Relief Worldwide has also been accused of engaging in practices related to terrorist financing and maintaining ties to the Muslim Brotherhood. While the Scouts Association did not comment specifically on the role of Islamic Relief in the challenge, the partnership raises questions about the broader implications of such collaborations. As the investigation continues, the Scouts Association has indicated it will provide further updates once it has completed its review. The outcome of this probe could influence future guidelines for Scout activities involving religious or cultural groups, especially those with complex political affiliations.
