Slovenia faces one of its most intense heatwaves in recent decades, with temperatures potentially breaking new records and experts warning of severe drought conditions. The National Environmental Agency (Arso) has issued a red alert across southern and central parts of the country due to exceptionally high temperatures, which are expected to persist without significant relief until late in the upcoming week. Meteorologist Brane Gregorčič explained that the heatwave initially affected western Europe before spreading to much of southern and central Europe. In Slovenia, temperatures have already exceeded 37 degrees Celsius, with some areas likely to see even higher readings in the coming days. He warned that the heatwave would continue without major cooling for more than just the end of the week, though he noted it remains uncertain whether relief will come on Friday, Saturday, or possibly even Sunday. The current heatwave could set several new weather records. According to Gregorčič, the period of time during which temperatures remain above 35 degrees Celsius could be unusually long. “This period of extreme heat is likely to be record-breaking in many parts of Slovenia,” he emphasized. Climatologist Gregor Vrtačnik added that this year’s heatwave is notable not only for its peak temperatures but primarily for its duration. He pointed out that while the highest officially recorded temperature in Slovenia remains at 40.8 degrees Celsius, measured in 2013 at Ljubljana Airport, there is a possibility that some of these records could be surpassed or even broken. One particularly striking potential record is the number of consecutive days with temperatures exceeding 35 degrees Celsius. So far, the record stands at ten such days, but this year could see up to eleven or even twelve. Vrtačnik highlighted that temperatures above 35 degrees were once a rare occurrence, but today, such heatwaves are becoming increasingly frequent and prolonged. He compared this year’s situation to similar events in 2013, 2015, 2017, and 2022. High temperatures are further exacerbated by dry soil conditions. With less moisture content, the ground heats up more quickly, leading to daily high temperatures that can be three to four degrees higher than they would be under normal rainfall conditions. Drought conditions are intensifying alongside the heat. Agrimeteorologist Andreja Sušnik warned that the drought began developing early in spring, with earlier heatwaves in June and the prolonged heat in July worsening the situation. She noted that the main issue is rapid evaporation of water. At several meteorological stations, daily evaporation rates have reached five to six liters per square meter. “We are talking about fast, hot droughts caused by heatwaves,” she explained. Although local rains may temporarily improve conditions, they do not alter the overall trend of soil drying. Hydrological drought is also continuing. According to hydrologists, approximately 60 percent of monitoring sites are currently in low-water conditions. If the heatwave continues, water resources will face additional strain. The National Institute of Public Health warns that the heat poses serious health risks beyond mere discomfort and fatigue. It can lead to dehydration, heat exhaustion, and life-threatening heatstroke. Director of the Center for Health Ecology Nina Pirnat advises people to avoid being outdoors between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m., unless absolutely necessary. Those who must go outside should ensure adequate fluid intake, wear light and breathable clothing, and stay in shade. Children are especially vulnerable.
