Traditions of Slovenian mountaineering and alpinism have been inscribed into the register of the intangible cultural heritage. The decision was announced on August 3rd, 2026, at 8:20 PM in Ljubljana, according to reports from RTV Slovenia. This marks a significant addition to the national registry, which has now included both activities as part of Slovenia’s cultural identity. The registration process was completed following a proposal that highlighted the historical and cultural significance of these practices within Slovenian society. Mountaineering and alpinism have long played a vital role in shaping the nation's identity, particularly in the Alpine region. These traditions are deeply rooted in the country's history and continue to influence its social fabric today. Mountaineering, as defined by the Planinska zveza Slovenije, encompasses a range of knowledge, values, practices, and organizational forms associated with visiting mountains, mountain education, path management, and the operation of mountain clubs and huts. It contributes to the preservation of traditions, the transmission of safe movement skills in the mountains, and the responsible relationship toward mountainous environments. Alpinism, on the other hand, refers to the sport of climbing, including rock climbing, snow and ice ascents, and alpine skiing. It relies on knowledge of mountain environments, technical expertise, experience, ethics, and camaraderie in overcoming challenging terrain. One of the key elements of Slovenian mountaineering is the establishment of mountain paths, which connect peaks, huts, and natural landmarks, offering hikers a chance to explore the diverse landscape and rich cultural heritage of the country. The oldest such path, known as the Slovenian Mountain Path, links numerous high points and serves as a symbol of the nation’s connection to its mountainous environment. Slovenian alpinists are among the most successful globally, and their achievements reflect the deep-rooted tradition of the activity. The practice of alpinism is more than just a sport, it fosters personal growth, resilience, self-discipline, courage, and strong bonds between individuals. Peter Mikša, an author of scholarly works that contributed to the official registration, expressed his understanding of the inscription as a tribute to over a century of Slovenian mountaineering and alpinism. Organizations such as the Planinska zveza Slovenije play a central role in promoting and preserving these traditions. With over 1,600 clubs and more than 60,000 members, the association supports a wide network of enthusiasts who engage in organized and unorganized mountain activities. Historically, the foundations of organized mountaineering in Slovenia date back to the second half of the 19th century. The construction of huts, the marking of trails, and the naming of mountain areas in the Slovenian language were all pivotal in reinforcing the nation's cultural footprint in the mountains.
