A family living in the woods is preparing to move into a completely eco-friendly home, which will replace their current residence located on the same property. The new house, designed with sustainability in mind, has received approval from the municipality of Palmoli, though the family must wait several more months before it becomes habitable. The transition will not require them to relocate far from their existing home, which will remain on-site and repurposed. The new home is described as a passive house, measuring nearly 70 square meters. It is constructed using natural and environmentally friendly materials, and its design ensures high energy performance. As a result, traditional heating systems such as radiators or air conditioning will not be included. Instead, the family will rely on a fireplace, a wood-burning stove, and the body heat generated by its occupants to maintain a comfortable indoor temperature. For hot water, solar thermal panels will provide the necessary supply. The bathroom will also feature a unique ecological system known as fitodepurazione, which mimics the natural purification processes found in wetlands. This system will treat wastewater, both domestic and agricultural, in an environmentally responsible manner. The house includes a bioclimatic veranda with large windows offering views of the surrounding fields, as well as two bedrooms and the eco-friendly bathroom. The project represents a tailored solution for the family, allowing them to continue enjoying the rural lifestyle while minimizing environmental impact. According to architect Maria Mascarucci, who was interviewed on the “Morning News” program on Channel 5, the goal is to create a small example of bioarchitecture that combines regulatory compliance, sustainability, reduced consumption, and landscape protection. She emphasized that this intervention transforms a rural dwelling into a model of responsible living grounded in technical expertise. The old house, which has been the subject of much discussion, will have a new purpose. It will serve as a storage space for tools used in farming, products from the agricultural activity, and even as a cellar. This arrangement allows the family to retain many of their previous habits while staying close to the space they cherish. The project reflects a growing trend toward sustainable living, particularly in rural areas where residents seek to balance modern comforts with environmental responsibility. By integrating advanced eco-friendly technologies and natural systems, the new home aims to set a precedent for future developments in similar settings. The family’s decision to embrace this approach underscores a broader shift towards conscious consumption and ecological awareness.
