American officials described the negotiations as positive and productive, according to Israeli journalist Barak Ravid, who cited a U.S. official stating that the discussions had produced structure and guidelines for establishing the pilot zones. However, the actual withdrawal will require more time. The Lebanese and Israeli governments are engaging in direct political talks for the first time in decades with the aim of strengthening the ceasefire. Hezbollah, however, is not participating in these U.S.-mediated talks, which initially took place in Washington and later in Rome. Despite the ceasefire, Israel continues to attack targets in Lebanon, and its military remains within the country. Beirut and Hezbollah view the occupied security zone as a violation of international law. The area in question covers approximately 620 square kilometers, which is roughly six percent of Lebanon’s territory. Observers suggest that a full withdrawal could take several months or longer. The pilot zones represent a key step toward a broader Israeli withdrawal from Lebanese territory, following a framework agreement between the two nations. Under this agreement, the withdrawal would be tested in these designated areas before potentially expanding to other regions.
