Two new cultural productions have opened this week in Austria, drawing attention to both historical themes and contemporary issues within the performing arts. “Horrible Habsburger,” a satirical theater production, has begun its run in the Mödlinger Luftschutzstollen, a former air raid shelter turned venue for experimental performances. The cool temperatures inside the bunker, ranging from twelve to fourteen degrees Celsius, provide a unique setting for the audience. In addition to these theatrical offerings, there is an initiative aimed at increasing the presence of women in the Salzburg Festival. A research focus titled “Frauen*Festspiele.Salzburg” is conducting an online survey to gather opinions on which female authors should be represented at the festival and what measures could enhance gender equality. This effort precedes the annual Festspiel-Academy, which takes place on August 15th and 16th. The academy aims to examine the absence of women in key roles within the festival, such as organizers, composers, and directors. Participants include notable figures like Melanie Unseld, Sophie Reyer, Johannes Maria Staud, and others, who will discuss strategies for improving representation. The Salzburg Festival's programming also includes the premiere of Elfriede Jelinek’s play “Unter Tieren.” Jelinek, a renowned Austrian playwright, is known for her sharp critiques of society and politics. Her work is set to debut during the festival, adding another layer to the discussion around gender and artistic expression.
