Der Standard wurde am 19. Oktober 1988 in Wien vom Journalisten und Verleger Oscar Bronner gegründet. Es wird von der Standard Medien AG veröffentlicht, die von der Bronner-Familie kontrolliert wird: Nach dem Rückkauf der 49% der Anteile des deutschen Sueddeutschen Verlag im Jahr 2008 blieb der Besitz bei der Bronner Family Private Foundation und Oscar Bronner, wobei Familienmitglieder die Anteile direkt ab 2021 übernahmen.
