An organ donor saved her life. Now she’s marrying his brother. Brooklyn Dotson, now 24, owes her life to Noah Waters' older brother, Michael, who donated his liver shortly after his death in 2003. Brooklyn was born with Alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency, a genetic disorder that requires a liver transplant. At 19 months old, she was placed on a transplant list and faced a grim prognosis, doctors estimated she had only three days to live without a transplant. A liver arrived just after Christmas 2003, and Brooklyn survived. The donor was Michael Waters, a 10-year-old boy from Dayton, Ohio, who had been struck by a car while playing at a friend's home. His mother, Tina Poteet, recalled that Michael was known for his generosity, often sharing food with others and donating his winter jackets to children in need. After Michael's passing, Poteet contacted Life Connection of Ohio to learn more about the recipients of his organs. It turned out that Brooklyn’s mother, Ashley Baker, was also seeking information about the recipient of Michael’s liver. The two mothers began exchanging letters and eventually met, forming a bond based on shared grief and hope. The families remained connected, with Brooklyn and her mother visiting Ohio regularly. Brooklyn and Noah Waters, Michael’s younger brother, quickly formed a friendship. Noah was 6 when he first met Brooklyn, and the two spent time together during visits. Brooklyn described Noah as someone who brought laughter and warmth, especially during her hospital stays. When Brooklyn required another surgery at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital in high school, Noah visited daily, staying by her bedside and offering comfort. As Brooklyn pursued higher education at Lindsey Wilson University in Kentucky, Noah built a career as a project manager in Ohio. Their lives continued separately, though they maintained a close friendship. They both dated other individuals, and Noah has an 8-year-old son from a previous relationship.
