Die Wochenzeitung Semana wurde 1982 von dem Journalisten Felipe López Caballero neu ins Leben gerufen und wurde fast vier Jahrzehnte lang von López kontrolliert. 2019 erwarb der Milliardär Jaime Gilinski Bacal 50% der Grupo Semana, und im November 2020 kaufte die Gilinski-Gruppe die restlichen Aktionäre auf, um die Kontrolle zu übernehmen.
