President Volodymyr Zelenskyy dismissed calls for holding wartime elections, warning they could divide Ukraine further, during a press briefing in Kyiv on August 22. Speaking to journalists, including representatives from Agence France-Presse, Zelenskyy described the idea of conducting elections amid ongoing conflict with Russia as a “huge risk.” He argued that such actions would act as a “tsunami” for the nation, potentially splitting Ukraine along ideological or political lines. His remarks followed a controversial suggestion by his former defense minister, Mykhailo Fedorov, who had urged the organization of elections without providing a clear plan. Ukraine has already suspended elections under martial law, a decision broadly supported by the population as the country continues to fight Russian forces since the 2022 invasion. Zelenskyy emphasized that holding votes during active hostilities would not only endanger national unity but also undermine the sacrifices of soldiers and civilians alike. “If we want to destroy the country, then we can move in the direction of elections during these times of war,” he stated, reflecting concerns about the stability of the state during a critical phase of the war. The debate over wartime elections intensified after Fedorov, who was recently removed from his position as defense minister, unexpectedly called for organizing a vote. His proposal, however, lacked a detailed roadmap, leading to confusion and even distancing among some of his supporters. Zelenskyy criticized Fedorov during the briefing, suggesting that the former minister either acted independently or was influenced by external pressures. “I believe he is going himself, or being pushed, toward wrong things,” Zelenskyy said, highlighting the tension between civilian leadership and military command. Fedorov, known for advocating modernization of Ukraine’s armed forces and supporting the use of drones in combat, had previously aligned with Zelenskyy’s administration. However, he faced criticism for clashing with the military command, particularly regarding its traditional and rigid approach to operations. Initially, much of the public supported Fedorov, especially after he played a role in pushing for the removal of the head of the Armed Forces, Oleksandr Syrsky. Despite this support, Zelenskyy warned against disrespectful attitudes toward military personnel, stating, “Since when has marketing outweighed those giving their lives?” Zelenskyy positioned himself as a unifying figure, emphasizing the need for societal cohesion amid the war. “I believe society and soldiers must not be divided,” he said. “We must acknowledge this risk, that there may be movement in that direction, toward dangerous developments.” His comments underscored the broader challenge of maintaining national solidarity while navigating internal political tensions. At the same time, Fedorov expressed his own frustrations, accusing Zelenskyy of failing to address corruption within the government. He pointed to a recent money laundering investigation, which raised questions about Zelenskyy’s knowledge of potential wrongdoing within his inner circle. Fedorov asserted that it was his “moral right” to initiate discussions about elections, arguing that transparency and openness are essential components of democracy. “If I cannot share my ideas and be open about them with my own society, then what are we fighting for?” he asked, framing the issue as a fundamental question of democratic values. Despite the controversy, public sentiment remains largely opposed to holding elections during the war. A survey conducted by the Kyiv Institute of Sociology found that only 15 percent of Ukrainians believed elections should proceed before hostilities conclude. This reflects widespread concern about the practical challenges of conducting fair and secure voting under current conditions, including logistical hurdles for displaced citizens and the threat of Russian disinformation campaigns. As the situation unfolds, both sides continue to navigate complex political and ethical dilemmas. With international allies planning meetings to strengthen Ukraine’s air defenses and address ongoing attacks, the focus remains on sustaining resilience rather than engaging in divisive domestic debates. For now, the path forward appears to remain firmly rooted in the immediate demands of survival and security.
