Nova študija, objavljena v reviji Nature Reviews Clean Technology, poudarja, da se lahko domove učinkovito ohladijo brez velikega odvisnosti od klimatske naprave. Znanstveniki z Univerze v Novem Južnem Walesu in Univerze RMIT v Melbournu so analizirali tehnologije in gradbene materiale, ki ohranjajo nižje temperature z minimalno porabo energije. Med najbolj učinkovite rešitve so radiacijski in izhlapevalni hladilni sistemi, zelene strehe, materiali, ki odbijajo sončno svetlobo, in napredni ventilacijski sistemi.

As global temperatures continue to rise due to climate change, more households are turning to air conditioning for cooling. However, scientists warn that this approach is not sustainable in the long term and suggest that air conditioning should be the last resort, not the first choice, for home cooling. Recent data from the International Energy Agency (IEA) indicates that air conditioners and fans already consume approximately 10 percent of global electricity consumption. This figure is expected to grow further due to increasingly frequent heatwaves. A new study published in the journal Nature Reviews Clean Technology highlights that homes can be cooled effectively without heavy reliance on air conditioning. Researchers from the University of New South Wales and RMIT University in Melbourne analyzed technologies and building materials that maintain lower indoor temperatures with minimal energy use. Among the most effective solutions identified are radiant and evaporative cooling systems, green roofs, materials that reflect solar heat, and advanced ventilation systems. Some of these methods offer additional benefits, such as helping retain warmth during winter months. According to the researchers, the key is preventing heat from entering the building in the first place. Shade structures, reflective materials, quality ventilation, and modern building materials can significantly reduce indoor temperature before air conditioning is needed. The study estimates that combining these technologies could potentially reduce the need for air conditioning by up to 80 percent. In urban areas, indoor temperatures could drop by more than four degrees Celsius, depending on local climatic conditions. The researchers emphasize that cooling should not be considered a luxury accessible only to those who can afford high electricity bills. Instead, energy-efficient solutions should become the standard in modern construction. Historically, humans have successfully managed extreme heat long before the invention of air conditioning. Ancient civilizations such as the Sumerians built homes that facilitated natural airflow and used materials that helped retain coolness inside. The authors conclude that cooling should not be treated as a luxury, but rather as an essential function that should be made available to all through efficient and sustainable means. The findings underscore the importance of integrating passive cooling strategies into residential design. These approaches not only reduce energy consumption but also contribute to environmental sustainability. As cities expand and heatwaves become more common, adopting such measures will be crucial in ensuring comfortable living conditions while minimizing ecological impact. The shift towards smarter, cheaper, and climate-friendly cooling methods represents a critical step toward a more resilient and sustainable future.
