A tragic traffic accident on the Primorska motorway claimed three lives, including two children, on Thursday. The incident occurred between Unc and Ravbar, causing severe disruption to traffic and resulting in fatalities. According to the police station in Koper, the victims were a 74-year-old woman and two children aged four and eleven years old. The collision happened in the afternoon hours. Initial reports indicated that a 64-year-old man from Bosnia and Herzegovina had parked his truck in a lay-by due to a technical fault. The driver of an Italian-registered Audi A4 then ran off the road barrier and collided forcefully with the left rear part of the trailer. The exact sequence of events is still under investigation. Five people were inside the car. All were citizens of North Macedonia who resided in Italy. Inspector Peter Leban of the Police Station in Koper highlighted the tragic family connection among the victims. “The vehicle was driven by the driver, his wife, and their mother, along with the children. The driver remained unharmed during the crash, while the children seated at the back did not wear seat belts,” he explained. The driver and his wife sat on the left side of the vehicle, while all other passengers on the right side perished. A doctor confirmed the deaths of the 74-year-old woman and the two children. A 33-year-old woman was injured and transported by helicopter to the hospital, while a 39-year-old driver was taken by rescue vehicles. The driver of the truck, who was present in the cab during the collision, was not harmed. He had appropriately stopped in the lay-by and parked correctly, according to Leban. Following the completion of the investigation, a criminal complaint will be filed against the cause of the accident for causing a traffic accident through negligence. Police conducted an inspection of the scene, with the state prosecutor and a forensic officer also present. The motorway towards Koper was closed until 23:56. The police have warned against reckless driving behavior. The motorway was quickly closed, but some drivers left the scene without proper emergency lanes set up. Some even abandoned their cars on the motorway without assistance. “Such actions are extremely irresponsible and dangerous. The law imposes a fine of 150 euros for such offenders,” warned Leban. Austrian rescuers also arrived at the scene, and the injured woman was later flown to the University Clinical Centre in Ljubljana for treatment.
