The case involves Lynsey Cribbin, a 36-year-old from Finea, County Cavan, who has lived with the condition for 14 years. She initially sought medical attention in 2012 after waking up with a severe headache, nausea, and unusual symptoms. Lynsey Cribbin was 21 in January 2012 when she arrived at Cavan General Hospital following a severe headache and feelings of illness. According to court records, she exhibited signs of staring in one eye and was transported via ambulance. At the hospital, an MRI scan was conducted. Counsel representing Ms. Cribbin argued that the results were misinterpreted, failing to identify an acute infarction requiring urgent intervention. By the time she was transferred to Beaumont Hospital in Dublin, it was claimed she could not receive effective treatment. Legal representatives stated that earlier transfer might have allowed for timely procedures leading to a better recovery. Ms. Cribbin suffers from locked-in syndrome and is paralyzed below the neck. Despite this, she remains cognitively aware and communicates primarily through eye movements, relying on family members for interaction. During the court hearing, she was accompanied by her parents, Peter and Catherine, along with extended family. The legal team highlighted that the HSE failed to properly interpret the MRI scan and did not recognize or manage an acute stroke. They also alleged that Beaumont Hospital did not provide an appropriate treatment plan and neglected to advise Cavan General Hospital to consult a stroke specialist promptly. These allegations were denied by both institutions. Judge Paul Coffey approved the settlement, acknowledging the emotional toll on all parties involved. He described the case as deeply tragic and noted the ongoing challenges faced by the family. The judge commended the Cribbin family for their unwavering support and care towards their daughter.
