Austria has announced plans to extend its compulsory military service from nine months to twelve months, marking a significant shift in the country’s defense policy. The new rule is set to take effect on January 1, 2027, requiring all male citizens to serve in the armed forces for a period of twelve months. The proposal was reached after prolonged discussions among coalition members, with the government aiming to secure support from both the far-right Freedom Party (FPÖ) and the Greens in parliament. A two-thirds majority in the National Council is required to pass such legislation, making the process politically complex. According to official statements, the extension includes three additional months of mandatory militia exercises attached to the basic military service.
