Varnostni svet ZN: ZDA zapustijo protestno zasedanje

The United States abruptly left a United Nations Security Council session today in protest after French delegate Jerome Bonnafont accused Washington of aligning with authoritarian regimes, including North Korea. The incident unfolded during a meeting focused on the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, marking one of the most unusual diplomatic confrontations in recent memory. The dispute began earlier this week when France compared the U.S. stance on human rights issues to that of North Korea, Nicaragua, and Russia. This comparison was made during a vote on extending the mandate of UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk. The U.S., along with several other nations, voted against the extension, prompting criticism from French officials. In response, the French mission in Geneva stated that the U.S. had become “isolated alongside North Korea,” suggesting a shift in American foreign policy that France views as hypocritical. During today’s session, French delegate Jerome Bonnafont took the floor to address these concerns. His remarks reportedly triggered the immediate departure of U.S. representatives, who walked out of the room. According to U.S. diplomat Dan Negrea, the comments were perceived as “hypocritical” and part of a broader pattern of France attempting to lecture other countries on human rights matters. Negrea argued that such statements, even on topics unrelated to international peace and security, undermined the credibility of the Security Council. Negrea further criticized France for its approach, claiming that the country often pretends to hold moral authority while failing to live up to its own standards. He emphasized that the U.S. has consistently advocated for human rights and that France's accusations lacked substance. The U.S. delegation’s decision to walk out of the session reflected their frustration over what they described as an attempt to undermine their position through rhetorical attacks rather than constructive dialogue. Both France and the U.S. are permanent members of the Security Council and possess veto power. Their disagreement highlights the deepening ideological rift within the council, particularly regarding how to handle human rights issues in the context of global conflicts. While the U.S. continues to support sanctions against Russia over its actions in Ukraine, France has increasingly called for stronger action against all states that violate human rights norms, including those in the West. The situation underscores the growing tensions among major powers within the UN system. With both nations holding significant influence, their public clash raises questions about the effectiveness of the Security Council in mediating disputes. The outcome of today’s session remains unclear, though the abrupt withdrawal of U.S. delegates signals a breakdown in diplomatic decorum and a challenge to the council’s ability to maintain consensus on critical global issues. As the meeting concludes, the focus will likely shift to whether the U.S. and France can resume discussions or if this incident marks a new phase of discord in international diplomacy.

Ocena pristranskosti (Progresivno): V članku so ameriške kritike francoskih komentarjev o človekovih pravicah označili za hinavske in politično motivirane, medtem ko stališče Francije predstavljajo kot načelno.
