It argued that the trial does not fulfill these criteria and instead allows for experimental treatments on vulnerable children solely to investigate possible benefits. Kiera Bell, a former patient at the Tavistock Centre who received puberty-blocking drugs as a child and later expressed regret over her experience, criticized the court’s decision. She described the approval of the trial as a tragedy and warned against the potential harm such interventions can cause. Bell stated that the trial reflects a broader issue within the medical community, suggesting that the pursuit of such research may conflict with ethical considerations surrounding the protection of children. A representative from King’s College London affirmed that the safety and well-being of the children involved in the trial would be their top priority. Dr. Hilary Cass, a paediatrician whose 2024 review questioned the basis for using puberty blockers in children, acknowledged the need for further studies despite concerns about potential long-term effects.
