The UK military has shown interest in acquiring a military variant of the electric flying taxi developed by British startup Vertical Aerospace, according to the company. The aircraft, known as the Valo, is designed for passenger transport and is expected to begin operations with paying customers by 2029. This follows a recent £10 million government grant, bringing the total UK state funding for the project to £48 million. The announcement comes amid ongoing efforts by Vertical to secure regulatory approval for its aircraft, which has been delayed due to the complexities of certification processes. Vertical Aerospace demonstrated its prototype at the Farnborough International Airshow, held at an airfield west of London. During the display, the aircraft transitioned from conventional flight using its wings to vertical takeoff and landing mode, showcasing its ability to hover silently, similar to a helicopter, before landing on the runway. This capability highlights the potential of the technology to transform urban transportation by offering quiet, emission-free travel options in densely populated areas. Despite the promise of electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) vehicles, the sector has faced significant challenges. Many startups have struggled to move beyond prototypes and into operational testing, leading to financial difficulties and some business failures. Vertical itself encountered a cash crisis in 2024, prompting the departure of its founder, Stephen Fitzpatrick, who previously owned the energy company Ovo. The company was subsequently acquired by US-based distressed debt investor Jason Mudrick, who helped stabilize its operations. Now, Vertical is navigating the intricate process of obtaining certification for its aircraft from the UK’s Civil Aviation Authority. The company is competing with other eVTOL developers, including US-based Joby Aviation, which has conducted public test flights from New York’s JFK Airport to Manhattan. Other notable competitors include Eve, owned by Brazilian aerospace manufacturer Embraer, and US startup Archer Aviation, along with several Chinese firms. While these companies all aim to redefine urban mobility, Vertical is currently ahead in terms of progress toward operational readiness. In addition to its electric model, Vertical is developing a hybrid version of the aircraft that incorporates a gas turbine alongside electric propulsion. This dual-power approach allows for longer ranges and faster refueling compared to purely electric systems, though it does involve some emissions. Stuart Simpson, CEO of Vertical, emphasized the strategic advantages of the hybrid design, particularly for military applications. He noted that the combination of silent operation, low noise and heat signatures, and extended range makes the aircraft appealing for defense purposes. The UK government has confirmed its interest in the military applications of Vertical’s eVTOL, hybrid-electric, and autonomous technologies. The company aims to deliver its production aircraft capable of carrying four passengers by 2029, following a recent delay to its initial 2025 target. Simpson stated that the company is confident it will meet the revised deadline, citing positive communication with regulators such as the Civil Aviation Authority and the European Union Aviation Safety Agency. Vertical plans to establish its manufacturing base in Kemble, Gloucestershire, where it intends to produce approximately 150 aircraft annually. The government funding is tied to the company’s efforts to finalize site selections for its aircraft and battery facilities, underscoring the importance of infrastructure development in realizing the vision of widespread eVTOL operations. As the sector continues to evolve, Vertical’s progress represents a key step forward in the quest for sustainable, efficient urban transportation solutions.
